Saul becomes king
God was the deliverer of Israel.....against the philistines.
God literally fought against the enemies of Israel for them through the “seer” or prophet.
the Lord Discomfited the philistines...meaning...
bring into motion or confusion.
disturb
be beside oneself.
the people sought after a king to rule them and to fight their battles
the people already had a God that had made promises to be with Israel and to never forsake them
and that they would be a mighty nation and feared by all....but they still rebelled and wanted to serve man rather than God.
this is not much different than today....
during bible times, God spoke through prophets....
so God didn’t actually speak to the people directly but through a man anointed and chosen of God
we have the same thing today....God speaks through the preacher but the people still chose to go their own way and not listen.
Samuel was displeased because God was Israels deliverer but the people weren’t happy with that....
the people feared man more than they feared God...
the people wanted an actual person...they wanted to be like all other nations.
they wanted someone to rule over them and to deliver them from their enemies.
God wanted the nation of Israel to be set apart...
to be different..peculiar
God wanted his people to be set apart for Gods purpose
God had promised to be their deliverer
that they would become a mighty nation..but the people where never happy.
so Samuel began to tell the people all about what it was to have a king rule over them....all of the downsides to having a ruler.
Saul went to several towns looking for the asses and found them not..
he would have turned back but his servant made a suggestion to seek direction from a man of God (a seer/prophet) named Samuel
he passed through several towns until he reached the land of Zuph
God had told Samuel the day before as well as the day of that Saul would come
God had talked to the prophet but not to the man Saul.
Saul had no idea....he thought he was merely looking for his fathers asses or donkeys...
when Samuel saw Saul…he greeted him and told him that he would eat with him that day…to not worry about the asses for they where found.
So this whole time, Saul had no idea what was going on...or that he would be elected King.
imagine being just an ordinary person one day and king the next.
so Samuel told him to go to a city and he would see some holy men coming down from the mountain and that they would prophesy and Saul would as well...
so the spirit of God moved on Saul in preparation for his kingship.
Saul was told specifically to wait in Gilgal for the prophet Samuel and that he would perform the offices of the priest and to offer sacrifices unto God.
in doing so, he would let Saul know what he was to do.
this is an important thing to remember in our discussion of the downfall of Saul.
God made Saul a new man by the power of his spirit upon him.
Saul had a good start but there would be problems that Saul encountered that would be his down fall.
so Saul became Israels first king....appointed by God but because of the people....not the will of God.
it was never the intention of God to have a king to rule over Israel...God wanted to be their king, ruler, protector and deliverer......
God has always just wanted a relationship with his people.
we see that on Calvary, God became exactly that.....
in so much that the vail in the temple was torn from top to bottom symbolizing that we no longer had to go through a priest..but that we could go directly to the father through the man, Jesus Christ.
we where granted access to the very throne of God…to those that are in Christ.
to those that are born again of water and spirit....covered by the blood of the Lamb.
God promised that he would be all these things to his people if they would just follow him and obey his commandments.
