Your child comes to you in tears...
What do you do?
[I] ask - WHY are you crying?
The child responds - “So-n-so YELLED at me”
What do ya do?
[I] ask - Why did they YELL at you?
The child responds - “Because I hit so-n-so”
What do ya do?
NOW - some of you have caught on - Some of you are thinking - Didn’t we HEAR this already....LAST WEEK?
YES - you did.
Last week - i used this same analogy as my intro...
THIS WEEK - I REPEATED it - to make a point.
For those of you who CAUGHT on and realized it...
I want you to REMEMBER how you felt when you realized it.
Other than TODAY - if you realized it - I’m sure we’ve all experienced that - WAIT A SECOND moment - where we’ve thought… I’ve seen this before!
Like a De ja vu moment.
Well - That is the EXACT same feeling I got when reading our passage today.
In order to give you the story - let’s pull out some verses over the span of chapters 21 and 22 of 1 Samuel.
If you remember last week - we ended with David fleeing from Saul - as SAUL was busy worshiping the Kingdom…and in doing so trying to KILL David.
David had killed Goliath - and the people began ELEVATING David over Saul...
And Saul became - ANGRY
And this anger CAME from a place where Saul was AFRAID about something…remember what?
This ANGER came from a place where he was AFRAID to lose the KINGDOM...
The Kingdom had become an IDOL in his life...
And as we saw last week - SAUL’s disobedience to God - had led to God no longer WALKING with Saul (Spiritual separation)...
Which led to the Emotional separation - from PROPER God-honoring emotions - to EARTHLY emotions...
TO eventually a physical - RELATIONAL separation between Saul and David.
One that kicked itself off - by Saul trying to KILL David - SEVERAL times - with a SPEAR.
And so - David is ON THE RUN...
We pick it up there...

Quite a bit of text here - but I wanted you to get your eyes on it.
IN a nutshell - we see David continue to FLEE from Saul - as Saul continues to PUSH for his destruction.
BUT OVERALL - at the highest level of ALL of this - is God’s plan being played out.
And while SO FAR in this story between - Saul and David - - David has been the HERO…the one WITH God...
But TODAY - we’re going to look at BOTH men - to see things that we (TODAY) can fall into…but hopefully not much!
We FIRST look to David.
If we were to just BREEZE thru this section - we’d miss the fact that these statements by David - to the priest - were FALSE.
Verse 2 here contains LIES by David.
Saul had NOT done what David had said that he had done...
YET - this is David’s story...
WHY?
SLIDE: Prostituted Trust: Trusting Our Way More Than God’s Way
Prostituted Trust
If you remember - David had already been told that he was going to REIGN over Israel...
At this point - David KNEW who Samuel was...
He knew he was a PROPHET - speaking FOR God
And so at this point - David KNEW God’s plan...
So WHY the lies?
WHY did David lie to the Priest in Nob?
David KNEW the law!
Thou shall NOT lie...
He lied - because of the same reason SAUL didn’t WAIT for Samuel before making the sacrifices in … Gilgal
Remember that?
Samuel had told Saul to wait 7 days - and then he would come and make a sacrifice...
Saul didn’t WAIT long enough...
Why did Saul go AGAINST the command of God?
He let his circumstances DICTATE his path forward!
SLIDE:
His circumstances became his master
And it seems - the same could be said for DAVID!
David was shaping up to be - THE SAVIOR…and he ends up LYING to a priest...
He KNEW God’s plan to make him king - YET - because of the circumstances surrounding SAUL and his pursuit to KILL him...
He took matters into his own hands...
LIKE SAUL had done...
And did what he thought he needed to do - to PRESERVE his own life!
*How about us?
How about you?
David knew that God’s plan included him becoming RULER over Israel...
BUT - he DIDN’T know HOW that would come to be.
Same with US right?
As we saw last week - we KNOW our call to treat people with the Love of Christ...
BUT - HOW OFTEN do we let our circumstances KEEP us from living this way with others??
David knew LYING was a sin...
YET - he felt justified DOING SO when he felt his life was at stake...
We’re called to SHOW Grace to others...
be kind
tenderhearted
FORGIVING...
YET - when the RUBBER meets the road - and WE’RE the one who GETS RUN over...
when WE’RE the one who gets slapped
gets offended
gets the short end of the stick
gets THREATENED...
DO WE - like David here - PROSTITUTE our trust - and THINK that OUR way is better than God’s way?
Do we TRUST that a LIE will do US MORE GOOD than the truth?
Do we trust that DECEPTION will do us MORE GOOD than honesty?
*it’s one of those cases where - the family is ON the streets - and IN NEED… HUNGRY...
Do they justify STEALING in order to SURVIVE…?
*The man REALLY needs a job - and he’s had NO LUCK for the past year...
Does he justify LYING/Embellishing on his resume to get the job?
OFTEN - we will find ourselves in situations JUST like these...
We REALLY need that thing - NOW - so I will STRETCH the truth to make that HAPPEN!
We REALLY don’t want our PRIDE to be hurt - so we will REWRITE history so it now agrees with us.
Last week we talked about Unrepentant sin in our lives...
Unrepentant sin in our lives - usually ends up being - prostituted trust.
As believers - WE KNOW - the commands of God.
And A LOT of times in our lives - we BOW to our CIRCUMSTANCE - and obey our EARTHLY desires...
Instead of bowing to Jesus - and obeying His word!
FOR SURE - something we need to consider...
