Harry Randall Truman lived at the foot of Mout St. Helens in Washington. In 1980 a warning was issued that the volcanic mountain would erupt. Everyone in the nearby area vacated, except Harry. Regardless of all the prompts from friends and neighbors Harry refused to move. He died on May 18,1980 because he refused to listen.
-crowds increased - Luke 11:14
Luke 11:14 ESV
14 Now he was casting out a demon that was mute. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the people marveled.
-Why mention the seeking a sign? Luke 11:16
Luke 11:16 ESV
16 while others, to test him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven.

The Problem: A Failure to See the Problem

-They sought a sign = was it to know whether Jesus was really from God?
The people seeking a sign do not need more light but better receptiveness to the light they already had. What God is doing in Jesus is plain enough.
R. C. Sproul
Luke 5:31–32 (ESV)
31 And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.
32 I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”
-What sign were they seeking? None
Luke 11:16 ESV
16 while others, to test him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven.
-What other sign would they need?
Luke 16:31 ESV
31 He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’ ”

The Solution: The Gospel

Matthew 16:4 ESV
4 An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So he left them and departed.
-What sign will be given? How is Jesus comparable to the sign of Jonah?
-Is it Jonah’s preaching and Ninevah’s repentance?
-No, it is how Jonah was in the fish for three days what seemed to be the grave then came out alive, how Jesus died and was in the grace three days and resurrected
Matthew 12:40 ESV
40 For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Acts 1:22 ESV
22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.”

The Judgment for Those Who Reject

1 Kings 10 “1 Now when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the Lord, she came to test him with hard questions. 2 She came to Jerusalem with a very great retinue, with camels bearing spices and very much gold and precious stones. And when she came to Solomon, she told him all that was on her mind. 3 And Solomon answered all her questions; there was nothing hidden from the king that he could not explain to her. 4 And when the queen of Sheba had seen all the wisdom of Solomon, the house that he had built, 5 the food of his table, the seating of his officials, and the attendance of his servants, their clothing, his cupbearers, and his burnt offerings that he offered at the house of the Lord, there was no more breath in her. 6 And she said to the king, “The report was true that I heard in my own land of your words and of your wisdom, 7 but I did not believe the reports until I came and my own eyes had seen it. And behold, the half was not told me. Your wisdom and pros…”
-The point: here is a woman from far off, with no background in the Law, she came at her own expense, she traveled to search for the truth
-They had something greater than Solomon before them, greater than the wisdom of Solomon, greater than any of the truths that Solomon could express to this queen and yet the Jews could not see it
-She will rise up at the judgment
-Gentile Ninevahites will stand up at the judgment, neither had at their disposal what the Jews had
