What is Revival?
www.dictionary.com
restoration to life, consciousness, vigor, strength, etc.
an awakening, in a church or community, of interest in and care for matters relating to personal religion.
an evangelistic service or a series of services for the purpose of effecting a religious awakening
Next week revival!
A time of rest, renewal, and/or awakening
4 Now he had to go through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.
7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” 8 (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)
10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”
So, Jesus tells this woman that He is the one who gives living water!
There are so many reference in this statement....
Think about the Israelites in the Old Testament…God was the provider of water for them!
Micheal read this a couple weeks ago...
Flip forward to:
1 Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.
4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” 5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” 6 He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life.
Jesus is the Living Water and He is the one who gives it freely!
Unfortunately, sometimes the water runs dry in our lives
How many times have you had a spiritually high moment and then it seems to go away?
And this is why we need revival!
A time of rest, renewal, and/or awakening!
Why Do We Need Revival?
Nancy Leigh DeMoss List of Reasons
when we do not love Him as we once did.
when earthly interests and occupations are more important to us than eternal ones
when we would rather watch TV and read secular books and magazines than read the Bible and pray.
when church dinners are better attended than prayer meetings.
when concerts draw bigger crowds than prayer meetings.
when we have little or no desire for prayer.
when we would rather make money than give money.
when our Christianity is joyless and passionless.
when we know truth in our heads that we are not practicing in our lives.
when we make little effort to witness to the lost.
when the fire has gone out in our hearts, our marriages, and the church.
when we seldom think thoughts of eternity.
when people have to be begged to give and to serve in the church.
when God's people are more concerned about their jobs and their careers than about the Kingdom of Christ and the salvation of the lost.
when people have to be entertained to be drawn to church.
when church services are predictable and "business as usual."
when Christian husbands and wives are not praying together.
when we don’t long for the company and fellowship of God's people.
when sin in the church is pushed under the carpet.
when believers can be at odds with each other and not feel compelled to pursue reconciliation.
when our marriages are co-existing rather than full of the love of Christ.
when we are more concerned about our children's education and their athletic activities than about the condition of their souls.
when our children are growing up to adopt worldly values, secular philosophies, and ungodly lifestyles.
when we are bored with worship.
when known sin is not dealt with through the biblical process of discipline and restoration.
when we tolerate "little" sins of gossip, a critical spirit, and lack of love.
when we will watch things on television and movies that are not holy.
when our singing is half-hearted and our worship lifeless.
when we start fitting into and adapting to the world, rather than calling the world to adapt to God's standards of holiness.
when our prayers lack fervency.
when our prayers are empty words designed to impress others.
when our hearts are cold.
when we aren't seeing regular evidence of the supernatural power of God.
when we are content to live with explainable, ordinary Christianity and church services.
when we are making little or no difference in the secular world around us.
when we are blind to the extent of our need and don't think we need revival.
Do any of these things resonate with you? If so, there is a good chance that you need a time of rest, renewal, and/or awakening
Let’s look at some scriptural basis for revival
8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
6 Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?
1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
How Does Revival Happen?
14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
We humble ourselves
We seek His face
We turn from our wicked ways
19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, 20 and that he may send the Messiah, who has been appointed for you—even Jesus. 21 Heaven must receive him until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets.
We repent and turn towards God
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
We confess and receive His forgiveness!
What Revival Accomplishes
A Clean Heart
A Clean Mind
Intimacy With Jesus
Intimacy With other Believers
Fresh Vision/understanding
Let’s end with a couple of verses from Isaiah..
30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
18 “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. 19 See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.
