The Picture of Faithfulness
-teacher, soldier, athlete, farmer
v.1-2
1 You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus,
2 and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.
-as for you
-be strong, present imperative, keep on being empowered by God
-same greek word
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.
12 I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service,
17 But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth.
-the strength comes through the grace of Christ, we are saved by grace but we are also sustained by grace
-result: to serve as a teacher
-entrust to faithful men, the teaching and protection of truth had to come from more than just Paul
-reliable = faithful, trustworthy
-able to teach
1 Timothy 3:1-7

1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand,
2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.
v. 3-4
3 Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.
4 No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him.
-endure hardship = to suffer together with someone
2 Timothy 1:8
8 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God,
-perhaps Paul had a concern with Timothy’s age and willingness to endure suffering
-good soldier = 1 Timothy 1:18
18 This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare,
-a reminder of Timothy’s commitment to the Lord
-What were the civilian pursuits? possessions, worldly pleasures, pleasing others, politics, etc
-It is about choosing the right pursuit
v.5
5 An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.
-athlete - complete devotion
-commitment to training
-focused on the prize of the mission
7 Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness;
8 for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
v.6
6 It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops.
-farmer - who receives fruit from the labor, spiritual fruit
v.7
7 Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.
-The point: a faithful servant of Jesus will possess the skills of a teacher, the willingness to suffer as a soldier, the self discipline and commitment of an athlete, and the hard work of a farmer
-reflect, ponder on
