Intro
When did you come to know Jesus?
Our church is 30 years old..... our church exists because of Faith in Jesus and the obedience of that faith to make disciples of all nations....
We began last week with the mission of God presented in Genesis 3 for the anticipation of the offspring of Eve that would crush the serpents head..... that would make right what was wrong in Adam and Eve’s sin......
Join me in Genesis 12 as we continue the story of redemption and the mission of God. We find Abraham believing in Faith, responding in obedience and being called to be a blessing because of the blessing
The Missionary Abraham
The Missionary Abraham
1 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.
2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.
3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Faith and Obedience for the sake of the nations!
verse 1 -
Abram in sin and sinful surroundings...... his father’s house and father’s land..... SIN
Call to GO - FAITH is required
verse 2 -
God will work a miracle through Abram
God will make his name great
In Genesis 11.... we find a people trying to make a great name for themselves...... and God thwarts that plan, in Genesis 12 we find God choosing her person to create His people on this earth.
God will bless Abraham and require of him to bless others -
1. a command: ‘And be a blessing!’ Abram is commanded to be a blessing. AND
2. a purpose: ‘so that you will be a blessing’. YHWH commands Abram for the purpose of
blessing the world through Abram.
Raise your hands if you are this Abraham?.......
Health, Prosperity, Fame came to Abraham for the purpose of God at this moment in time....... that does not mean you may insert your name here and claim it!.........
verse 3 -
Abram is blessed to be a blessing
He and his people cannot be cursed - Balaam figured that out firsthand in Numbers 23!
All the families - Ta ethne - the naitons of the earth
God made his people Israel for the purpose of the nations coming to faith in Christ!
“We must be global Christians with a global vision because our God is a global God.”
(John R.W. Stott)
Faith and Obedience for the sake of the nations!
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
How would Abram be this light to the nations? What does Abraham do in order to fulfill the faith and obedience for the sake of the nations?
1 example in Genesis 18
19 For I have chosen him, that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice, so that the Lord may bring to Abraham what he has promised him.”
20 Then the Lord said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grave,
Command and teach and obey the way of the Lord and bringing his family in the way
God hears the outcry of people seeking justice for sin in this world...... Abraham is in this moment with God that righteousness and justice might be shown to some through him.
Genesis 3-11 - How much sin can we get into.....
murder
prideful name making
sexual sins
stealing, killing, etc.....
Genesis 18...... there is an outcry against sin in the world!..... God responds and God’s people are there in the midst of that outcry to reveal God’s righteousness and justice there for the promise to be fulfilled!
Faith and Obedience for the sake of the nations! - Abraham doesn’t see the list of unreached people groups.... but in Genesis 18 he sees Sodom and Gamorah as it cries out to God! God calls us into this story just like he called the early christians and Paul himself!
The Missionary Paul
The Missionary Paul
5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations,
Formula from Genesis 12 - Faith and obedience for the sake of the nations!
Pauls mission to the gentiles!...... Gentiles must hear the OT!
Paul used the Old Testament as his roadmap for evangelism and sharing the Gospel!
1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.
2 And Paul went in, as was his custom, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,
Acts 13 - The Jews rejected the message but the Gentiles saw the “light brought to the nations!”
Paul shows us another example of how to be a blessing to the nations..... God worked through Paul.....
God doesn’t need you.... and he doesn’t work for you :)
God works through you!
2 Timothy 4:17 (ESV)
17 But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth.

7 Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham.
8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.”
9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.
Faith and Obedience - for the sake of the nations
Paul makes it clear the gospel was presented here in Genesis 12, and we by accepting Jesus as our Savior our a part of the “all nations” but we too are joined into that mission of blessing all nations.
If you raised your hands this morning.... it is a direct fulfillment of Genesis 12 and a direct application of Galatians 3!
You and I are here because of the faith and obedience of men and women who were “Blessed to be a blessing” beginning with the patriarch ABRAHAM..... You and I are a part of a greater story.... one that we are called to join in as well.
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Hear the echoes of Genesis 18:19 - Command your kids and family to display righteousness and justice to the world for the sake of the nations......
Jesus says - Go, command, and teach everything and call them to faith and obedience as well for the sake of the nations!
How does my story fit within the greatest story of the Bible? The redemption of the nations?.....
You the missionary
Pray -
2 And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.
Individually - God open my eyes to see how I can bless others.
Time, talents, money, presence, words of encouragement
As a church family - God open our eyes to bless our community
Help us have this in our nature to bless others!
Pray that church never becomes what we may get out of Church, but glory God would recieve and how others might be blessed through it!
Go and Tell
How does your blessing of family, house, work, job, money, gifts, and talents be used
RELATIONSHIPS MATTERS!
Talk about righteous and justice in the life of your church family......
Be the person that wont stop sharing about what is happening in the church......
Mob evangelism - We are better together! Connect with everyone in order to see this command come true!
Seeing the mission field -
2 And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.
How have you been blessed by God to be a blessing to others?
Where in our city is there an OUTCRY because of the effects of sin?
Lord give us eyes for the harvest!.... That it would become our nature at LCBC!
