Text: Proverbs 18:20-21
Snake in the cemetery When I was in jr. High my family visited a small church in the mountains of Colorado. As we got out of the car a few of the cousins and my brother ran around the side of this old church.
My little brother Ben fell face first and as he looked up there was a coiled rattlesnake looking at this group of children that were interrupting his rest in the sun. Our family has always just shook at the thought of what would happened if Ben had kept his stride and run over top of that deadly creature. As history would have it the only one at the church that had a funeral service that day was the snake.
Matthew 12:33–35 KJV 1900
Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit. O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.
I. Poison's work is Personal.
We do the greatest harm to the closest people. Scripture speaks of very close sources of poison. - Fruit from a tree.
Poison has to actually enter the blood stream to do its damage. And this is the image that God gives to the reader. The closeness of your target increases your chances of hurting them with an uncontrolled tongue.
Often we at kinder and more considerate of absolute strangers than we are our own brothers and sisters or even our parents.
Illustration: Teen puts on so that the Pastor doesn't know how rude she is to her own mother.
Illustration: Brand new husband took his wife's hand and said, "Honey now that we're married may I point out a few defects I see in you." “Sure” said his sweet wife, "it was those defects that kept me from getting a better husband."
Application: This is a heart issue. "Abundance of the treasure of the heart."
Analyze the heart
Be honest about what is there
Surrender it to God
II. Poisons's Pattern
Hemotoxin is what a rattlesnake uses as a venom. Literally the word means blood damaging. • Some clot the blood in the kidney. • Some won't let the blood clot at all. • Some deplete oxygen in the blood.
Gaboon viper send huge clots into the stream immediately stopping the victim in its tracks. This venom depletes the life in a slow and agonizing way.
• Poisoned words indicate the problem is a person "What is wrong with you?" "Why do you act so stupid?" "Do know how to do anything right?" "You are just like ____________."
• Poisoned words leave wounds that burn long after. Hurting people hurt people.
It shocks me how many men behave in destructive ways as a result of the hurtful words said of them by some beloved figure. The trouble comes when that man is someone else's beloved figure. Stop the cycle.
III. Poison's Prescription
What I call Words of Potential.
1. Words of potential indicate problems exist, and people are the cure.
What do recommend?
How do you think we could solve?
Use "We" words -indicate your on the same side.
These words demonstrate that you are in this together. They indicate that we are side by side.
2. Words of Potential leave strength to build on.
They are words that enourage people to try something new and give the confidence to become what God would have them to be.
Encourage - Inject Courage
No dependence in the flesh We become poisonous when we rely on self. Pharisees we're doing relationship with God without Christ. So build those closest to you not with "you can do it". Rather with "all things through Christ" No bringing up past failure. Christ often asked why those that are forgiven most forgive the least. It is as if we are to suffer wrong doing in the name of Christ.
No brining up problems just to win the argument. Cheap cheap cheap.
Bringing up character flaws in a combative ways we throw everyone on the defensive. Handle problems in a calm cool participatory atmosphere. Don't pull the pin and lob it into the conversation. "Oh yeah, well you chew with your mouth open!!!"
