Text: I Timothy 2:1-8
The purpone announced in chapter. 1 was that Timothy would stay faithful and war a good warfare. For (16) Jesus Christ demonstrates lonsuffering in the salvation of sinners.
1 Timothy 1:16 KJV 1900
Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.
For the Purpose of Glorifying God (17)
1 Timothy 1:17 KJV 1900
Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
So the text opens with this as its context. Remember that the church has had false teachers slip in to do damage but this is not the only opposition facing the church. We have a vacation from handling the inner conflict to focus on the church’s response to outward oppression.
You will find that the purpose is the same as we discovered in chapter 1.
We pray for our everyone.
This is the first essential attitude of one that believes in prayer. I will pray for anyone anytime. I will err on the side of praying to much for to many people. I will give my attention to the needs of others and be ready to pray on anyone’s behalf.
We pray for our leadership.
We are not stingy with prayer. And we recognize that there is a need to pray for the leadership today. You may ask is there really a need. Stick your head out an open window and see that sin is in charge. Lies are being taught as truth. Politicians are incentivized to do opposite the will of freedom loving people. People are disincentivized to work. Traditional values are being tossed out. NOt because they are traditional but because they are biblical. Every agenda Is supported with Nobel sounding elequince and a husband and wife trying to raise children without the nosy government is dinegraded. We all need Jesus. So we Pray.
Does prayer actually make a difference?
- Esther called for Prayer
- Daniel spent all night in prayer with the three
- Daniel prayed in the Lion’s Den.
Why we should pray (2-3)
You might be shocked to find out that the reason to pray is not get your way. Rather it is for the purpose of seeing God get His.
God’s will is that we could live in peace and godliness and honesty.
Transition: With the mention of God’s will it is valuable for us to consider if our lives and even our prayers line up with His will.
Because if we are honest our prayers usually line up with what matters to us.
If you are praying for a raise, it may be that this is where your attention lies.
If we are praying more for our ball team to win than for your father’s salvation maybe our value system lies.
Transition: With this in mind the Apostle will remind us of our Father’s eternal mission.
I. God’s eternal Mission.
. God wants all men to be saved.
. God wants all men to come to the knowledge of the truth.
The Gospel is true
Not all truth is the Gospel.
God wants us to have a grasp on truth.
But it is obvious that this is pointing to the knowledge of the truth of the Gospel.
II. Man’s eternal Mediator
Notice that Paul at this point is going to connect the value of our prayer and the strength of our Salvation. It is here in this passage we find that Christ is our Mediator.
By that it is mean that Jesus stands between God and Man.
This is the necessity for prayer. Scritpure is clear that I don’t know how I ought to pray. Scripture is clear that I am not righteous enough to go into God’s presence. So I have a mediator - Jesus Christ.
How does this work in practical application. Well I know that I am not saved without a mediator. Jesus stands between me and the judgement of God.
This is seen in our prayer life. Jesus taught us how to pray.
Our Father…
After this manner therefore pray ye:
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Matthew 6:9–10 KJV 1900
After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
In My Name…
John 14:12–14 KJV 1900
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
This does describe to us who we are praying too.
I know that there are some that pray “in your name”. But Jesus taught us to pray to the Father in Jesus name. Since we are Trinitarians we don’t believe that the Father and the Son are the same Guy.
Unknowingly we can put off modalism in our prayer. That is to say that Jesus and God are the same Guy just doing a different job. That is error. Remember when you pray you are praying to father in the name of his precious son.
III. God’s Eternal method
This is important for us to remember because what is being stressed is the eternal plan of God that invovles the individual aspects of the Christians life. Just because you and I are trapped in this lifetime doesn’t disconnect us from the eternal salvation found in Christ.
It is the death and resurrection of Jesus that gives us access to this power in prayer. So when we think of how hard praying is we can remember it is nothing compared to the sacrifice of Calvary.
IV. God’s Earthly Messenger
Paul has been chosen by God to serve as a missionary to the Gentiles.
He was called by God to see the Gentiles saved. So his call is for people to pray for the lost.
Consider the value of seeing more come to salvation.
Christ’s kingdom will be known among men.
Christ’s value of peace will be known to all men.
Christ’s Gospel will know more expansion.
“God gave rest and the gospel multiplied.”
So what does God want He wants men to Pray…
How easy is it to hear a message about prayer and then not pray. I do mean men ought to pray as if the women didn’t need to. O they need to but the application is men as opposed to verse 9 when the women are given instruction. Men Pray.
It is humbling for a man to pray for other leaders.
It is accountability for a man to pray for the conditions of his family.
It is honoring for a man to depend on God.
Prayer meeting…
