Profound Words
Text: Matthew 12:31-37
CIT: Every Word is Profound.
Always Profound: I had a buddy in college that struggled to be "Profound". He would spin every phrase to have this hidden beauty. He wanted everything to be that quotable moment. You know that saying that is so full of meaning and layers that it is powerful no matter when you use it. He would be "Life is the Hot dog how you live is the condiment." We'd be "Yeah, Travis, can you just hand me the ketchup.”
(Really profound statements) We all have some favorite mantras that we hold to Profound statements that we turn to again.
“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.” - Jim Elliot
"In the end, people are persuaded not by what we say, but by what they understand.” - John Maxwell
"If you cannot do great things, do small things in a great way.” - Napoleon Hill
We all love statements. They inspire the best in us. They have layers and profound meaning that takes a few passes to truly grasp.
False Dichotomy The problem with phrases like these is that we start thinking that there is a difference between the really important words and the normal words that we use everyday. Problem is that Jesus teaches something very different.
CONTEXT: The Pharisees had bought into this lie. They thought that there was difference between what you do in church and what you do outside church. They allowed room for "holy" life and "private" life. If you said something on the temple steps it had more weight than if you said it in your neighbors back yard.
They showed this broken thinking one day as they watched Jesus heal a man who because of demonic possession was both blind, but unable to see. The devil had struck him blind so that he was dependent on others, but then made it impossible for him to express his pain with his mouth. Sadly the violence of the demon would make helping or caring for this young man very difficult. When the Pharisees saw this they said that this was because Christ was using black magic, demonic power, as if he had partnered with Satan.
By the way, that doesn't make sense Satan would kick satan out. Jesus points out how stupid this thinking is. The King of one Kingdom doesn't work against himself like that.
Line Crossed They didn't know it but they crossed line... You can make fun of Jesus. But don't you dare mock the Spirit by how he works. - Jesus calls this blasphemy.
And they did mock Jesus. • He was Nazarene • Not Good Looking • Heals on Sabbath • He was Poor • He was from Galilee and nothing good comes from there.
Jesus let that slide off his back.
But don't you dare mock the Spirit which is how he did what he did. • Nature of his Power • Origin of his Power • Authority of his Power
From this Jesus draws our attention to our words. Kind of random if you ask me but Jesus sees a bigger issue. The issue of our words is that there is no difference between the big moments and the small moments. Every word is important.
Every word counts because it reveals a heart issue.
Consider the tree (33) Good trees make good fruit Corrupt trees make bad fruit
Jesus brother James would use the same illustration. Streams of water can't be both good and bad. If you have poor words they come from a poor character.
- Your character is revealed by your word. (34) -
Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit. O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
Jesus points out 3 kinds of words.
Profane Words
Poisonous Words
Perverted Words
Productive Words
Jesus offers this instruction -
I. Your Words are profound because people hear them. (37)
You are Justified by your words - This is not to say that you are saved by your words. Rather, Justified is a legal term stating the condition of what we observe. Your words provide all the circumstantial evidence that others need to find us guilty of Loving God.
A. Your words tell others about your God The world knows that no man can serve two masters. The world knows that you can't have good and bad fruit from the same tree. They know that you can't say you have love for God and include the things that he hates.
B. Your words tell others about your Faith. If your words don't match your walk you have a faith issue. Failing to practice what you preach shows others you don't really believe what you say.
Transition: No problem right you are careful what you say around others. I'm glad you mentioned that.
II. Your Words are profound because God hears them. (37)
Your words will meet you again. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
Your words will vindicate or condemn you.
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
A word of Christ's condemnation...
Those words you have taken lightly are the same words Christ died to cleanse. As a believer we are then to guard our tongue so as to honor the Cross of Christ.
