Chapter 8 we saw Jesus’ authority in:
Healing
Controlling the weather and the seas
Casting out demons
We saw Jesus “trying to shrink the church”
Telling folks the high cost of true discipleship
Count the cost rather than just follow for the miracles
The men of Gadara refusing Jesus and telling him to leave because “The world loves it’s pigs”
Back Home
Back Home
1 And he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city.
Jesus leaves and goes back across the Sea of Galilee to Capernaum, where He has made the headquarters of His mission
Back where he ha healed the centurion’s servant; healed Peter’s mother-in-law; healed many other sicknesses and cast out many demons
Easier to forgive sins or make the lame to walk?
Easier to forgive sins or make the lame to walk?
2 And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. 3 And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. 4 And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? 5 For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? 6 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. 7 And he arose, and departed to his house. 8 But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men.
Vs. 2: “thy sins be forgiven thee” not the first thing cause we think of for paralysis and we shouldn’t necessarily see it here, but John 9 shows the culture then did
2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? 3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
Vs. 3: “this man blasphemeth” some of the local Galilean legal teachers accuse Jesus. Parallels in Mark and Luke “only God can forgive sins”; This is basically the moment Jesus draws a line in the sand by claiming the authority of God!
Vs. 6: “Son of Man” Not saying God doesn’t forgive sins; when they heard him use this title of Himself, they thought of:
13 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. 14 And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.
Vs. 8: “multitudes marvelled…given such power unto men” may be reading too much into the thoughts of the crowd since the Bible doesn’t say it, but seems like they miss it. This power not given to any “men” but to this MAN, the Man Christ Jesus!
Follow me.
Follow me.
9 And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him.
“receipt of custom” is a tax collector. Worked for Herod, sanctioned by Rome. Despised by all, patriots for sanctioned employment by Herod and Rome; regular people for “overtaxing” and stealing.
Supper at Matthew’s
Supper at Matthew’s
10 And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners? 12 But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. 13 But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
Luke tells us this was Matthew’s house
Not merely meeting, but sharing a meal. In the ancient world, generally a shared meal was a clear sign of identification. (Marriage supper of the Lamb)
Scandalous for a Jewish teacher to eat with such sinners, let alone in the house of a tax collector
Vs. 13: Hos 6:6 “6 For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.”
Pharisees need to learn to worry less about clean and unclean and sacrifices and more about the salvation of people. This is the righteousness Jesus told the disciples that would have to have more of than the Pharisees. Righteousness that worries more about ritual than mercy, is not the righteousness of the Kingdom of Heaven
“Discipleship is not for the comfortable and respectable, but for those whom conventional society would rather keep at arms length. The Pharisees can see only their failures, but Jesus sees their need, and the fact that they acknowledge themselves gives him the opportunity to fulfill his calling to “save his people from their sins.” (1:21)
Why don’t your disciples fast?
Why don’t your disciples fast?
14 Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not? 15 And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast. 16 No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse. 17 Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.
Jesus points to the festivities of a wedding party that would last several days. A symbol of joy and celebration, and provide a picture for the new life in the Kingdom of Heaven
Jesus paints a picture with 2 parables of the new and joyful religion He brings with the Kingdom of Heaven and how it just plain won’t work with the old traditions shown in the fasting of the Pharisees and disciples of John.
But vs. 15 points out that fasting WILL have a proper place in His followers though
Lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live.
Lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live.
18 While he spake these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live. 19 And Jesus arose, and followed him, and so did his disciples.
Whether faith or desperation we’re not told. But without hesitation or worry of the clean or unclean from touching a dead body, for mercy they go
If I may but touch his garment...
If I may but touch his garment...
20 And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: 21 For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. 22 But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.
Physical and spiritual separation for 12 years. Here we are told her faith to reach out to Jesus fearing the risk of rebuke for risk making Him unclean, leads to healing. Jesus offers no rebuke. Once again, “not clean or unclean, but mercy”
The maid is not dead, but sleepeth.
The maid is not dead, but sleepeth.
23 And when Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise, 24 He said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. 25 But when the people were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the maid arose. 26 And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land.
asleep can wake up, death is not the end
laughed Him to scorn
Thou Son of David, have mercy on us.
Thou Son of David, have mercy on us.
27 And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us. 28 And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord. 29 Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you. 30 And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it. 31 But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country.
Vs. 29: “According to your faith” Faith is mentioned with the centurion, the leper, the official, and secretly with the woman with the issue of blood. This is the first and only time in Matthew faith is mentioned as a condition and requirement.
Vs. 30: “straightly charged” = warned fiercely. Only here in Matthew. They disobey. Why told to keep this one quiet? Does anything happen to them? Stay quiet where the Bible’s quiet.
He casteth out devils through the prince of devils.
He casteth out devils through the prince of devils.
32 As they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil. 33 And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marvelled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel. 34 But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils.
Earlier when the paralyzed man walked, the people marvelled that God gave that power to men. Here they now marvel seeing no man before this one.
The Pharisees don’t deny Jesus’ power, but question it’s source. He has said he shares authority with Yahweh, they clam it’s from Satan (12:24 Beelzebub, the prince of devils)
Conclusion
Conclusion
The whole town has been whispering of the ability of Jesus to do miracles
The tension is beginning to grow between Jesus and the religious leaders.
Jesus has claimed the authority of God forgiving sins and the visible proof of that claim is the raising of the dead.
Before too much longer the whole nation will be talking about this carpenter, who says He’s God
Fully God and Fully man!
21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will. 22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: 23 That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him. 24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, 21 Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.
