The Gospel of John
The Gospel of John
John brother of James, son of Zebadee and Salome, one of the son’s of Thunder.
Fisherman.
Disciple that Jesus loved. One of the inner circle.
John was the one that Jesus trusted with His mother.
Last Week
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Word- Logos.
Light -
John the baptist.
John the baptist.
6 There came a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7 He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe through him.
8 He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.
This is the complete purpose of John the baptist.
Mark cites Malachi and Isaiah
2 As it is written in Isaiah the prophet:
“Behold, I send My messenger ahead of You,
Who will prepare Your way;
3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness,
‘Make ready the way of the Lord,
Make His paths straight.’ ”
We will hear more from John the baptist next week.
About Jesus the disciple whom Jesus loved wrote.
9 There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.
This isn’t the idea of universal salvation.
Just because John writes that the true light enlightens every man, do that mean that every man is enlightened.
Third Shift
For you day walkers, you enjoy the light, but the son shines on everyone, weather they want it to or not.
Get home and get to sleep before the son came up.
Block out all the light I could.
The slighted sliver of sunlight that would get around my mask was a reminder that it was not night time.
You will be warmed by it, or you will hide from it, but it will shine on you.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.
How ironic is this?
the world was made through Jesus, ie God “Spoke” the world into existence, with His Word.
the Word came into the world, but the world didn’t know Him.
“The world didn’t recognize its own creator.”
74 percent of adopted adolescence want to learn who their birth parents are.
The want to know who made them.
The height of this irony is found in verse 11.
11 He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him.
John is talking about the Jewish people, who for the most part rejected Jesus completely.
but the words he uses are subtle.
He came to His own...
Two other times John uses this phrasing (his own)(their own)
32 “Behold, an hour is coming, and has already come, for you to be scattered, each to his own home, and to leave Me alone; and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.
27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into his own household.
complete ownership and authority.
He came to His own.
The Jewish people were His people.
Prologue
Prologue
The structure of the paragraphs in the Prologue.
Vs 1 and 2,3
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
vs 4 and 5
4 In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.
5 The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
vs 6,7 ,8 and 9
6 There came a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7 He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe through him.
8 He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.
9 There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.
The next two verses stand apart. There is not a corresponding or complementary thought.
Which puts all the emphasis on these verses.
The entire prologue builds to these verses, which sum up the entire gospel of John.
12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,
13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
“right” Power or authority.
Not Children of blood, will of the flesh, or of man (natural birth)
Children (child) (NOT SON)
Will of God.
