Transcript
1 Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.
5 And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.
6 The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits.
7 Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.
The difficulty of the Christian life cannot even be compared to the blessings and excitement
You are a Warrior
You are an athlete - Be disciplined
you ran well who hindered you?
You are a Farmer - Sow the seed of the Word
Sow good seed
you sow and it takes time to reap
You are a member - Be connected to the corporate reality of the body of Christ
No one is exempt
You are a Slave -
21 Art thou called being a servant? care not for it: but if thou mayest be made free, use it rather.
22 For he that is called in the Lord, being a servant, is the Lord’s freeman: likewise also he that is called, being free, is Christ’s servant.
23 Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men.
24 Brethren, let every man, wherein he is called, therein abide with God.
Slaves purchased
Slaves would accept Christ
There was a law that bound the slave to the owner
When you were saved you have been called to be a slave to Jesus Christ
Is that a negative
Rom 1:1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,
1. You were a slave to sin
17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
There was no choice
6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Before you were saved sin controlled you; Owned you
Now you don’t
2. You were under the authority of sin
Sin had dominion
The bondage of sin has no power over you anymore
12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
Let not -
13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
Neither yield - you have the strength as a child of God to yeild to what
Yield yourself unto God -
3. Sin Does not have authority over me!
Sin does not have dominion over Christ,
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
4. Do you want to be a slave to sin?
We make decisions as a child of God!
Can you go a minute without sinning?
16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
What is the power of the Gospel?
The power to free slaves of sin to be servants of God!
Rom 6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
Rom 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
Free from sin
I don’t have to obey sin!
A servant of righteousness
6. Practical Biblical Instruction
19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.
21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
The passion
The drive
The addiction
We are a slave to righteousness
Motivating us
Working to sin
Risking harm to sin
Pursuing sin
With that type of motivation serve righteousness
7. We are supernaturally empowered to totally submit to God
You could not do that unsaved
22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Sin kills everything it touches
The attribute of the slave gives power to submit
44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
We obeyed the god of this world before we were saved
Now we can obey the passions of our Heavenly father
8. The undeniable power of the slave
1 Corinthians 9:19–23 (KJV 1900)
19 For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.
20 And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;
21 To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.
22 To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.
23 And this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you.
That i would submit to others
That I would serve all men
That I might be a slave to the Gospel
Do we ever suffer loss so that others will be saved?
A passion to see others saved
The slave attribute is the obedient life of the Christian
Lord, I know i’m not a slave to sin anymore - the devil will tell you you are
Lord, I want to serve you, I want to serve righteousness
Christ already gave victory over sin, now we are slaves of Christ and the Gospel
Thank you Lord I’m not in bondage
