Scripture reading

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.
44 All the believers were together and had everything in common.
45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.
46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,
47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Devoted Themselves

How or what did they devote themselves to? (the Apostles teaching or the word)
What does being devoted look like? (holding firmly to something.) (love, loyalty, or enthusiasm for a person or activity. 2 religious worship or observance.)
Why do you worship God? better quality of life, home in Heaven, paying tithes
Isaiah 1:13: Stop bringing meaningless offerings! Your incense is detestable to me. New Moons, Sabbaths and convocations—I cannot bear your worthless assemblies.
Hebrew word for worship:
ezev: is to worship with expectation of payment; i scratch your back you scratch mine.
shachah: worship in a sense of joining Him, knowing His heart
So they devoted themselves

The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, Revised 3. The Spirit and the Church in Acts

The quality of life in the early Church is clearly connected to the promise of the Spirit. The beautiful picture of the initial community of believers (Acts 2:42–47), which depicts apostolic teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, prayers, signs, wonders, holding “all things in common,” and praise to God, indicates that all are implicitly connected with the first outpouring of the Spirit.
