Effectual Prayer pt. 2
Effectual Prayer pt. 2
Daniel Fast:
16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.
13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. 18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.
Elijah had a nature like ours:
what he didn’t have is a crucified and risen saviour
He didn’t have the Holy Spirit internally
What he did have was thriving prayer life
He prayed earnest prayers
RECAP:
Talked about Daniel and how he lived his life
What fasting is for and why we do it
Humbling yourself
Fasting puts your spirit in the drivers seat
We position ourselves to hear from God
7 And I, Daniel, alone saw the vision, for the men who were with me did not see the vision; but a great terror fell upon them, so that they fled to hide themselves.
Lets take a look at Jesus’ fast:
Then Jesus being filled with the Holy Spirit
led by the spirit into the wilderness
temptation by the DEVIL
1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. 3 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”
4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”
5 Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written:
‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’
and,
‘In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”
7 Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ ”
8 Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”
10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”
11 Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.
Aspects of the Temptation (Matthew 4):
Identity (if you are the Son of God)
Tempts his flesh
Tempting God(knowingly creating a circumstance to have God bail you out of)
Tempting his motives (Worship me and I’ll give you the outcome you desire without the sacrifice)
The Devil was offering Jesus a shortcut to his end goal
He was offering Him His desired outcome without sacrifice
Our desired outcomes will never come without Sacrifice
-Jesus’ fast solidified his Identity in the Father
-Hunger is going to be the easiest part for most of you
-What’s going on here is the hard part is the mind
-Satan will try and mess with your identity
Jesus’ fast solidified his assignment:
His first Sermon:
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
Our assignments as Christians require two things:
1. Laying down our lives
2. Picking up our cross
24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
Fasting is a perfect opportunity to become habitual of denying ourselves
New Years Resolutions:
Give up smoking
Stop being angry
Be a better father
become more educated
Go to bible school
learn a new language
Get in shape
Resolutions are about picking things up or putting things down
Fasting is the same way
What are you picking up this year
3 Things we have to pick up this year:
The God kind of life
10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
A God kind of life
A transcendent life
A life that doesn’t look like anyone else's
2. We have to pick up his word
8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
3. We have to sow to the Spirit
8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.
What we have to lay down:
We have to lay down our lives
25 He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
2. We have to decrease so he can increase
30 He must increase, but I must decrease.
3. We have to let go of the weight we tend to hang onto
1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
24 By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25 choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, 26 esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked to the reward.
Passing pleasures of sin
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
Dear God, I am a sinner.
I’m sorry for my sin; please forgive me.
I believe Jesus Christ is Your Son
and that He died for my sins
I believe You raised Him back to life.
I want to invite Jesus into my heart
today.
I’m make your Lord of my life
In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.
