Haiti is a country that is beautiful; it is a Caribbean Island. Some think that it was the most beautiful island in the world at one time.
It is filled with violence. I was told by the missionary friend of the citizen whom I interviewed that it is so unsafe that they cannot go to the market during certain times (Desalus, 2023).
I was told that back in November they were not able to go to the market for 3 weeks on end (Desalus, 2023).
The terrain of Haiti is mountainous. Even in Port-au-Prince, hills cover the countryside (Desalus, 2023).
The people of the country speak a language called Creole (Desalus, 2023).
It is a combination of French and Spanish.
This makes sense since Haiti was formerly a French slave colony.
Therefore, French is the language that is taught in many primary schools. This has led to many Haitians speaking more of French.
The interviewee indicated that many Haitians do not even know their alphabet.
In Port-au-Prince, the citizens of the city throw their trash in the streets until the rain comes and washes it out into the ocean. It is a filthy city; currently, it is probably one of the most dangerous portions of Haiti (Desalus, 2023).
Gangs have infiltrated the city and wreaked havoc. The citizens of the country are terrorized by the gang violence that controls the country.
While Haiti does have government, their government does not have the policing power to quell the gang violence.
Therefore, the police often just take bribes from the gangs and allow them to do whatever they want.
“Haiti is the world’s oldest Black republic” (Smith, 2022).
Haiti’s government has previously been controlled by dictators (Smith, 2022).
It is one of the poorest countries in the world. Much of the land area is not as densely populated as the capital, which is so densely populated that there are almost no trees. However, it is all overcrowded.
Since Haiti is so poor, one would think that gas prices would be cheap, but this is not the case. Gas is extremely expensive (Desalus, 2023).
Further, it is very difficult for someone to earn a days wages in the capital.
· The temperatures in Haiti are hot.
Furthermore, the person who I interviewed indicated that in the summer, at times it feels warmer that 120 degrees (Desalus, 2023).
