Text: Genesis 5:24
And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.
INTRODUCTION: “Enoch walked with God”
Story of Enoch told in few words. Greatest not most talked of.
Those who know God must walk with Him
He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
How we know that we know him?
And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
How we know He is with us?
For John was not yet cast into prison.
I. IMPORTANCE OF WALKING WITH GOD
A. God accepts such—Hebrews 11:5
By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.
B. God is present with the obedient—2 John
C. Such are blameless before God—Luke 1:1–5
D. Such are happy before God—Psalm 1:1–5
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
II. WHAT IS IMPLIED IN WALKING WITH GOD
A. We must be agreed
Can two walk together, except they be agreed?
1. We must be one
Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
3. We must walk In God’s way
Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
B. We must have faith
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
1. Faith comes from hearing—Romans 10:17
2. Anything without faith is sin—Romans 14:23
3. If God does not say it, we sin in doing it—2 John 9
C. We must be obedient.
1. God is with obedient—1 John 3:24
2. Obedience better than sacrifice—1 Samuel 15:22
3. Confessing Christ requires obedience—Luke 6:46; John 14:15
D. We must be friends of Christ.
1. Only obedient are friends—John 15:14
2. Abraham called friend of God three times
E. We must suffer hardships.
1. We suffer to reign—2 Timothy 2:12
2. All who live godly must suffer—2 Timothy 3:12
Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
III. RESULT OF WALKING WITH GOD
A. Partake his divine nature
Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
