Andrew
Introduction:
· John 1:35–41 (NLT) — 35 The following day John was again standing with two of his disciples. 36 As Jesus walked by, John looked at him and declared, “Look! There is the Lamb of God!” 37 When John’s two disciples heard this, they followed Jesus. 38 Jesus looked around and saw them following. “What do you want?” he asked them. They replied, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?” 39 “Come and see,” he said. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon when they went with him to the place where he was staying, and they remained with him the rest of the day. 40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of these men who heard what John said and then followed Jesus. 41 Andrew went to find his brother, Simon, and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means “Christ”).
· He was the first chosen disciple
· Here is an interesting look on how Jesus picks the 12
· Luke 6:12–16 (NIV) — 12 One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. 13 When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles: 14 Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, 15 Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, 16 Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
· Spent all night praying
· The last entry is probably the most interesting “who became a traitor”
· V:14 Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew.
· Peter is always named first but is often called Peters brother
· I’m Dale’s son or Chris’ wife
1. Some background
a. Nothing spectacular.
i. Son of John and brother of Peter
ii. Was a fisherman
iii. Andrew originally came from Bethsaida and later lived in Capernaum.
iv. It was in Capernaum that Andrew owned fishing craft
v. He was in partnership with his brother, and the brothers of Zebedee, James and John (Luke 5:7, 10).
b. John the Baptist
i. The forerunner of Jesus
ii. Andrew left his fishing business to become a disciple
iii. He would heard John preach about the coming Messiah
iv. Mark 1:4–8 (NIV) — 4 And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. 6 John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
2. When Andrew meets Jesus
a. The Lamb of God
i. John 1:29–30 (NLT) — 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30 He is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘A man is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’
ii. Jesus gets baptized – to fulfill all righteousness
b. The next day
i. John 1:35–37 (NLT) — 35 The following day John was again standing with two of his disciples. 36 As Jesus walked by, John looked at him and declared, “Look! There is the Lamb of God!” 37 When John’s two disciples heard this, they followed Jesus.
ii. Peter is certainly a center figure in scripture
iii. But it was Andrew as a disciple of John the Baptist and introduces Peter to Jesus.
iv. The importance of this encounter can’t be overlooked

c. Fishers of men

ii. No doubt he shared his experience with family and friends
iii. They meet again
iv. Out for a Sunday stroll

vi. Peter and Andrew drop everything and follow Jesus
3. That first miracle
a. Water to wine
i. They travel from Capernaum to Cana for a wedding
ii. It’s 16 miles and they walked
iii. This would most likely reassure their belief in Jesus
4. Andrew the evangelist
a. A little boy and some fish
i. John 6
ii. It was Andrew that brought the boy to Jesus
iii. It was Andrew that brought Peter to Jesus
iv. It was Andrew that brought the Greeks to Jesus
v. John 12:20–26 (NLT) — 20 Some Greeks who had come to Jerusalem for the Passover celebration 21 paid a visit to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee. They said, “Sir, we want to meet Jesus.” 22 Philip told Andrew about it, and they went together to ask Jesus. 23 Jesus replied, “Now the time has come for the Son of Man to enter into his glory. 24 I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels—a plentiful harvest of new lives. 25 Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for eternity. 26 Anyone who wants to serve me must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me.
