SLIDE: Sermon Title
Church --- Welcome Home!
SLIDE: Glory of God
Saint Irenaeus of Lyons (a 2nd Century Bishop) said, "The glory of God is man fully alive."
If you accept the definition of a man fully alive, as a man totally in love with Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit to do the same works Jesus did, namely healing the sick and casting out demons, then I think you must agree that we should put man on the endangered species list.
How did we get in this sorry condition? Well, it goes back to Adam in the Garden of Eden. God put Adam in charge to rule, cultivate and care for his creation. When Eve was approached and tempted by the serpent (the devil), what does Adam do? Nothing! Adam is the original couch potato. He’s sitting on his duff, stuffing his face with delicious snacks, watching the animal show and falling asleep. He does nothing to help his wife in her time of need. He’s fast asleep, oblivious to the deadly scene occurring in his presence.
There is nothing new under the sun and Adam’s "virus" has been past down to the present time. Only now, man is more comatose than asleep. One of the major institutions contributing to man’s sorry condition today is the Church!
Genesis 2 tells us that Adam was born not in the Garden of Eden (Eve was), but was created in the wilderness before the Garden of Eden existed. This gives us an insight into what God intended for man. God created man for freedom, challenge, risk, mission and adventure. Every time God meets a man in the bible; He calls him to an adventure. From Adam to the Apostle Paul and every man in between, God calls man to an adventure!
Genesis 1:27 says
Genesis 1:27 (NLT)
27 So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
SLIDE: Bearing the Image of God - QUESTIONS
What does it mean to bear the image of God? What is God like? This is a critical issue for a man. If I’m a living Icon of God himself, then I better have the correct image in my mind. Well, for sure God is adventurous. He is the ultimate risk taker. He created us with free will and the ability to reject His Fatherhood and love. That was a pretty risky decision.
The image of God we are frequently given in Church, is the image of Mr. Rogers. Jesus is Mr. Rogers with a beard, making the peace sign, with a few sheep and children around Him. In the Gospels we see Jesus making a whip and cleansing the temple of the money changers and the animals. Some pastors interpret that scripture account this way. One may say that Jesus "really lost it", lost control over His anger and another might state "this was totally out of character for Jesus, since Jesus is the ultimate pacifist." (A pacifist is one who opposes war or military preparedness, and proposes that all disputes be settled by arbitration according to Webster.) Those interpretations are NOT correct.
SLIDE: Exodus 15:3
The scriptures say in Exodus 15:3 the "The Lord is a Warrior “.
Jesus said He came to destroy the devil and his works and to set the captives free. This sounds more like Maximus from the movie Gladiator, than Mr. Rogers from PBS. In Revelation 19 :11-16 it says:
Revelation 19:11–16 NLT
11 Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse was standing there. Its rider was named Faithful and True, for he judges fairly and wages a righteous war. 12 His eyes were like flames of fire, and on his head were many crowns. A name was written on him that no one understood except himself. 13 He wore a robe dipped in blood, and his title was the Word of God. 14 The armies of heaven, dressed in the finest of pure white linen, followed him on white horses. 15 From his mouth came a sharp sword to strike down the nations. He will rule them with an iron rod. He will release the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty, like juice flowing from a winepress. 16 On his robe at his thigh was written this title: King of all kings and Lord of all lords.
SLIDE: Bearing the Image of God — Hearts of Men
The hearts of men are stamped with the true wild, adventurous, warrior image of God. When they come to Church and Christ is presented as Mr. Rogers making peace signs, their hearts tell them this is not for me. You know what? Their hearts are telling them the truth! When Christianity is presented as some dull, insipid rule keeping, like Mr. Rogers saying "Don’t pick flowers in your neighbors garden", can you blame them for thinking that Christianity is a crutch for wimps and weak men! No wonder they don’t return.
This image of Jesus as Mr. Rogers is absolutely killing men. Men are born to be warriors, accepting challenge and risk. Men were born to be free, to fight and do battle. They inherently know that if they must go to battle, they want to go with Maximus not Mr. Rogers. They know Mr. Rogers will get them killed. We need to tell men the truth! That Jesus is a warrior, He’s Maximus the Gladiator, that He has a battle for you to fight, a heroic, risky challenge for you to accept, a deadly foe to grapple with and that the fate of society is at stake. We need to tell men that Jesus the Gladiator is looking for a few good men to fight the good fight of faith. Challenge men with the truth of the gospel and they will fill the Church!
Reading the scriptures is like being on the frontier in a wild west town. It’s tumultuous, dangerous, a no holds barred shoot-out with lots of casualties. It’s a war! It’s a battle zone. It has heroes and cowards. It’s frightening. Death is at hand.
SLIDE: Real Men
God demands real men who will fight and die. Men with vision and courage. No wimps need apply! The gospels are like the beginning of Saving Private Ryan. It’s a harsh reality. People die, nailed to a cross! The bible is a bloody book.
We have domesticated, intellectualized, dumbed down, made bland, feminized and gutted the gospel! The Lord is a warrior! Have you noticed how very effeminate looking are the pictures of Jesus you see? What a joke. That’s not Mr. Rogers coming in glory on his white horse to judge the nations! The ultimate "shock and awe" awaits us when Jesus splits the skies like a lightning bolt on his return.
Part of the reason we have lost the correct, biblical image of Jesus is that we have lost the big picture. We are lost in our own small story and we don’t see the huge cosmic battle going on behind the scenes. Our vision is only what we can see with our physical eyes.
We witnessed a brilliantly designed and flawlessly executed military campaign during the war in Iraq. The cornerstone to that plan was the destruction of the enemy’s "command and control" capability in the first 24 hours. We took out his intelligence, surveillance and communications capabilities. We denied him the big picture. He couldn’t "see" where we were coming from and he couldn’t direct a coherent defense plan. The war was won in the first 24 hours. The lightning strikes to Bagdad were possible because the enemy was now deaf, dumb and blind.
SLIDE: Spiritual War
We are in a spiritual war, always have been, always will be. We are at war, continually and forever. Our enemy, the devil has taken out the Church’s command and control capability.
SLIDE: Lacking the Big Picture
He has rocked us to sleep. We don’t see the big picture. How many churches really believe and teach their people that they have a very personal enemy that totally hates them and who is constantly plotting how to steal, slaughter and destroy them and their families. We see this in John 10:10
John 10:10 NLT
10 The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.
In C.S. Lewis’ “The Screwtape Letters” we see: Screwtape instructing Wormwood on how to harass humans, how they have access to humans through sin, how they work in the human mind. These instructions are based on what the Scriptures tell us about demons and how they work. Furthermore, the Bible tells how we can be empowered to confront them, cast them far from you and have victory over them.
The devil is the father of lies (John 8:44).
John 8:44 (NLT)
44 For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.
The first lie of the devil is:
I’m not here,
I’m just a concept,
an intellectual idea.
When we swallow that; there goes the big picture; there goes our command and control capability. We are now at the enemy’s mercy. If we believe he doesn’t really exist or just a myth, then Satan has free reign to steal, slaughter and destroy.
Father Rainerio Cantalamessa, a preacher to the papal household said, "Could it be the reason we pretend the devil doesn’t exist, is because we don’t have the guts to acknowledge that he does, and to take the consequences."
Saint Catherine of Siena once said, we need someone to utter a "roar" over the body of the church, lusty enough to wake up the children within her.
Lord, please roar over us!
Do you know that: All the thoughts that run through our minds are not our own!
When I’m tempted to think idiotic, stupid things about my wife, which later prove to be false, where did they come from? Did I conjure them up all by myself or did I have outside "help." The divorce statistics in the Church are the same as secular society. How many marriages have been wrecked by demons harassing the minds of husbands and wives? How many could have been saved by the realization that we are at war and we have a personal, highly active enemy.
SLIDE: More Like Jesus
Jesus said that "the enemy comes to steal, slaughter and destroy ." We had better start believing Him. The scriptures say that "The Lord is a warrior, the Lord is His name ." We men had better become more like Jesus while there is still time.
