Introduction
Tonight will be a shortened service for us, but I encourage you all to go over and check out the Night of Worship. It’s going to be good!
Today is Palm Sunday. What is Palm Sunday?
Palm Sunday is the first day of Holy Week and it’s the day that Jesus rode into Jerusalem.
MATTHEW 21:1-11
The Bible tells us that people cut palm branches and waved them in the air, laid them on the ground before Jesus came into the city.
Palm branches actually are symbolic in the sense that they represent goodness and victory. We know that a few chapters later, Christ defeats death by resurrecting.
That passage also tells us that Jesus rides in on a donkey which symbolized the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy that Zechariah spoke.
Zechariah 9:9 NIV
Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
The passage in Matthew we see that the people shouted, ‘Hosanna!’ And ‘Hosanna in the highest’.
This was symbolic because the word ‘hosanna’ translates to ‘save now’. The people thought they needed an earthly king to see them, but God sent a savior who would bring salvation to all that would trust in Him.
Jesus actually wept for Jerusalem. He knew that as He rode into Jerusalem those same people that shouted ‘Hosanna!’ would shout ‘Crucify Him!’ Days later.
This is a picture of you and I. Paul writes about this in New Testament.
Romans 7:15 NIV
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.
Jesus knew that those people would betray Him, but YET HE DIED FOR US. Knowing what He knew He did it anyway.
Romans 5:8 NIV
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Palm Sunday is a reminder that God is greater than the things of earth. People need saving, but rather God saving us He sent us a savior that if we believe in Him and are filled with His Spirit we get to spend eternity in heaven.
Conclusion
As we close and before we head over to the Night of Worship, I want to spend a few moments in prayer.
Easter is like the Super Bowl of Christianity. People all over will celebrate leading up to next week, but let’s pause tonight.
Over the past few weeks I’ve been thinking of this phrase,
The things we defile, God can reconcile.
The things that we mess up, make dead God can always breath life.
Joben is going to play for about 30 seconds or so, then I’m going to pray and we will be dismissed.
