Philippians 2:12–18 ESV
12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. 14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing, 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, 16 holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. 17 Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. 18 Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me.
This whole section of scripture is connected but we are going to work through it over two weeks.
Matthew 5:14–16 ESV
14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Christ’s light shines in…

Your Participation

Philippians 2:12 (ESV)
12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,

Work out means to apply salvation, not to earn it.

Salvation is yours because of Jesus purchasing it for you and the Spirit bringing it to you.
You receive it by trusting in Jesus and entrusting your life to Jesus.
What does your participation look like?
Saying yes to Jesus every day.
Confessing your struggles to Jesus every day.
Listening for the leadership of Jesus every day.
Respecting and honoring Jesus as God every day.
Christ’s light shines as …

God Works in You

All of the work you put in is really God working in you
Philippians 2:13 (ESV)
13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
God is the one who started the engine and he is the fuel that keeps the engine running.
But I want to highlight the last four words...
God is working out all of this, enabling you to say yes to Jesus, to confess to Jesus, to listen for Jesus, to honor Jesus… All these things that are the best things for you and for your good. He is doing because he wants to. Because it makes him happy.
God delights to grow you and mold you into a more mature christian.
What does God’s work in me look like?
He implants in me the desire to say yes to Jesus every day.
He convicts me of sin and makes me want to be holy.
He softly and gently speaks to me about what is good for me.
Your flesh and sin will BE LOUD!!!!!!
He reveals to me the worth and glory of Jesus.
What does God’s work in me look like?
He implants in me the desire to say yes to Jesus every day.
He convicts me of sin and makes me want to be holy.
He softly and gently speaks to me about what is good for me.
He reveals to me the worth and glory of Jesus.
If you work these two texts backwards they will begin to make sense… Working out salvation is simply pulling out the work that God is doing inside of our hearts by His Spirit.
If you are getting married your spouse is likely going to buy you a wedding ring. What does that symbolize?
I wear mine everyday. But in reality, I have to put on more than just my wedding ring for people to know I am Claire’s betrothed. If I put on behavior that says I’m interested in other ladies, then what does that say about how I view my marriage?
Your salvation was bought by the blood of Jesus and initiated by the Spirit of Jesus, therefore, you should wear it everyday.
What now?
Do I want my entire life to be focused on Jesus?
Do I care if God hates the things that I love?
Do I feel like I have a relationship with God?
Do I see value in Jesus?
My Main Takeaway
Is there something you want to do? Something you wish you felt? Something you know you need God to do?
My Main Takeaway
This space is provided for kids to write down their reflection. What they want to do. How they want to change. What they want to feel?
Grow Group Questions
Would anyone like to share their main takeaway?
Share a time when you felt conviction of a sin. Did you stop it?
Have you ever experienced God’s still small voice of leadership?
What do you think prevents us from hearing God’s still small voice?
