Review & Overview
1. Previous Study’s Review
1. Previous Study’s Review
So far in dealing with the Plagues on Egypt we’ve looked at 9 of the 10…
1. Water to Blood: 2. Frogs: 3. Lice: 4. Flies: 5. Death of livestock: 6. Boils: 7. Hail: 8. Locusts: 9: Darkness.
Through these plagues God demonstrated His power & authority over nature & the false gods of Egypt.
All of Egypt was affected… crops were destroyed… livestock was killed… people had boils.
2. Current Study’s Overview
2. Current Study’s Overview
But God is not done dealing with the Pride of Pharaoh… So in chps.11 & 12 we have the 10th & final plague. The Death of the Firstborn…
And last time we saw how important it is for us to humble ourselves… because if we don’t… God will…
It could be that chp.11: is a parenthetical insertion from something that happened in chp.10:, because in chp.10:28 Pharaoh said the next time he sees Moses’ face he shall die…
In chp.11:8 after the explanation the 10th plague Moses went out from Pharaoh… so chp.11: could have taken place sometime during chp.10:
4 things in these 2 chapters…
1. The Plundering of the People of Egypt Vs. 1-3
1. The Plundering of the People of Egypt Vs. 1-3
1.1 Moses Knows One More Plague Vs.1
1.1 Moses Knows One More Plague Vs.1
When God called Moses to deliver the plagues Moses had no idea how many there would be… now he does, one more…
APPLICATION: That is often how God works is it not… One step at a time… I hate that… I would just as soon have the whole plan… the whole picture… but we’re to walk by faith…
7 For we walk by faith, not by sight.
1.2 The Future Plundering Vs. 2-3a
1.2 The Future Plundering Vs. 2-3a
In chp.12:36 we’re told that the Egyptians granted the Israelites all that they requested…
36 And the Lord had given the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they granted them what they requested. Thus they plundered the Egyptians.
So they plundered the people of Egypt…
1.3 God Used Moses Mightily Vs.3b
1.3 God Used Moses Mightily Vs.3b
This blesses my heart: because Moses was slow of speech… he was reluctant to go where God told him to go… he didn’t want to do what God told him to do…
Yet God used him in a mighty way… he was very great…
APPLICATION: Man, there is hope for all of us, amen? Its not about Ability… its about Availability…
8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: “Whom shall I send, And who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”
20 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,
2. The Plague That Will Come Upon Egypt Vs. 4-10
2. The Plague That Will Come Upon Egypt Vs. 4-10
2.1 The 10th Plague, Set Apart Vs. 4-7
2.1 The 10th Plague, Set Apart Vs. 4-7
So the 10th and final plague is the death of all the firstborn…
Again in vs.7b, the Lord makes a distinction between the Israelites & the Egyptians… they are different… they are set apart…
So too it should be with us…
1 Peter 2:9 we’re a chosen generation, royal priesthood, holy nation, His own special people…
9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
we’re called out of darkness into His marvelous light…
17 Therefore “Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you.”
APPLICATION: Note carefully the byproduct of being set apart, vs.7a… Peace: not even a dog will bark at an Israelite… even with all this destruction & death surrounding them… they will have Peace…
2.2 Pharaoh’s Hardening & Pride Vs.8-10
2.2 Pharaoh’s Hardening & Pride Vs.8-10
Again, Pharaoh already hardened his heart against God, God simply confirmed it…
His problem, Pride… & what a picture of just how devastating & destructive Pride can be…
God does allow calamity to come into our lives to get our attention & to break us of our Pride…
APPLICATION: So question is do we recognize it… and are we willing to humble ourselves…
1. Plundering of the People of Egypt: 2. Plague that will come upon Egypt:
3. The Passover that was given in Egypt Ch. 12:1-20
3. The Passover that was given in Egypt Ch. 12:1-20
3.1 A New Beginning: Calendar & Freedom Vs.1-2
3.1 A New Beginning: Calendar & Freedom Vs.1-2
The 1st month is the month of Nisan or Abib… March-April… this is the beginning of months.
It is the 1st month of the Jewish Religious Calendar… Which is when the Children of Israel were freed from the bondage of slavery in Egypt…
APPLICATION: What a beautiful picture that paints for us… As Jesus has freed us from the bondage of sin…
6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
APPLICATION: Just as this was a new beginning for them… Jesus has given us a new beginning…
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
3.2 Jesus Is Our Passover Vs. 3-7
3.2 Jesus Is Our Passover Vs. 3-7
So on the 10th of Nisan they were to pick a lamb without blemish or spot… it was to be perfect…
And on the 14th of Nisan they were to sacrifice that perfect lamb, putting its blood on the post & header of the door… so the outline for the Passover is given…
Beautiful picture of Jesus:
18 knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
7 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.
3.3 The Blood of the Lamb Vs. 8-14
3.3 The Blood of the Lamb Vs. 8-14
So it was the blood of the lamb that cause the destroyer to pass over that house….
It didn’t matter if they were Jew or Gentile… it was the blood that saving them from God’s Judgment.
22 And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.
4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.
3.4 True Freedom is a Life of No Sin Vs. 15-20
3.4 True Freedom is a Life of No Sin Vs. 15-20
Now a 2nd Feast is mentioned… Unleavened Bread… convocation: sacred assembly of people.
The 1st Feast was Passover: the 14th of Nisan, a one day feast…
The 2nd Feast was Unleavened Bread: the 15th through the 21st of Nisan, a 7 day feast… Lev.23:
It commemorates the urgency in which the Children of Israel left Egypt… they baked without Leaven.
Leaven is a type of sin…
Jesus knew no sin, 2 Cor.5:21…
21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
in Him is no sin, 1 John 3:5…
5 And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin.
so Jesus is this Unleavened Bread…
48 I am the bread of life.
This also should be a picture of the church:
1 Cor.5:6 purge out the leaven…we’re to Purge the Leaven of
6 Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?
Malice & Wickedness… 1 Cor.5:8
Hypocrisy… Luke 12:1
False Doctrine… Gal. 5:7-9
Herod = Pride & World Mark 8:15
Sadducees = Unbelief Matt.16:6
APPLICATION: The problem is we think we can get by with just a little bit of sin in our lives… Oh, it’s not hurting anyone…
True freedom is a life of no sin - A life that practices Righteousness.
3.5 The 10th Plague Executed Vs.21-30
3.5 The 10th Plague Executed Vs.21-30
So the 10th & final plague has come… as God poured out His Wrath on those who reject Him.
What a picture that is pointing to the end of the tribulation… when God pours out His wrath on a God rejecting world… seal, trumpet, bowl….
4. People who fled from Egypt Vs. 31-51
4. People who fled from Egypt Vs. 31-51
4.1 Worldly Christians Vs.31-39
4.1 Worldly Christians Vs.31-39
This is probably a city close to Rameses in Egypt.
But we are told there are some 600,000 men plus children, vs.37, which causes some to believe there where about 2 million people who came out of Egypt…
Included in that group were no doubt Egyptians, vs.38, mixed multitude…
This will be a problem in Num.11:4, because they are the ones who complained in the wilderness…
4 Now the mixed multitude who were among them yielded to intense craving; so the children of Israel also wept again and said: “Who will give us meat to eat?
No wonder Paul said in: 2 Cor.6:14 do not be unequally yoked with un-believers…
14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?
4.2 Vs. 40-51
4.2 Vs. 40-51
So God kept His promise right to the day… 430 years of slavery is now over…
It is celebrated with the Passover Feast… a Feast that is open to all who desire to be apart of God’s chosen people…
Paul said in Rom.11:17 we have been grafted in… so we too can celebrate the Passover Feast…
17 And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree,
And we do in Jesus Christ… because Jesus is our Passover, 1 Cor.5:7.
7 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.
ENDING...
