What the Bible is NOT

The Bible is NOT a rule book…but it does provide us with a model for life.
John 5:39 “You pore over the Scriptures because you think you have eternal life in them, and yet they testify about me.”
The Bible is NOT a weapon to curse and reject others…but it does judge the hearts of ALL who read its words.
Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
The Bible is NOT a magnifying glass to see the flaws in others…it’s a mirror to see the flaws in me.
“I have read many books, but the Bible reads me.” Karl Barth, quoted in Bill Hull, The Complete Book of Discipleship (Colorado Springs, CO: NavPress, 2006), 218.
The Bible is NOT God to be worshipped…but it points us to God incarnate (Jesus).
“All I need is my KJV and me!”
You can do all the things the Bible says to do, and still miss the God the Bible is pointing to (see Luke 18:18-23).
The Bible is NOT a modern book…it is an ancient collection of books telling a divine story of redemption and promise.
A collection of literary works from over 40 different authors, plus many anonymous sources such as hymns, traditional sayings, testimonies, songs, etc.
A collection of books written over a 1000 year period of time (apx 1000 BCE - 100 CE)

What is your Bible filter?

We all come to the Bible with preconceived ideas, cultural influences, experiences, etc… all of these things impact how we read Scripture and what we decide the Bible is saying.
Pride?
Theological Agenda?
Familiarity?
Cultural Baggage?
The cross of Christ is not just a symbol for Christianity, it’s how we understand God and interpret Scripture.
Martin Luther (Protestant Refomer 1483-1546)
“Crux Probat Omnia” meaning “The Cross Tests Everything”
However we interpret the Bible, our interpretation must come to the cross and be filtered there.

The Story God is Telling...

Jesus at the beginning. Jesus at the end.
Nothing can separate us from God’s love.
Resurrection is what defines the people of God.
What starts in darkness, ends with joy.
