Nehemiah 1:1–4 (NLT)
1 These are the memoirs of Nehemiah son of Hacaliah.
In late autumn, in the month of Kislev, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes’ reign, I was at the fortress of Susa.
2 Hanani, one of my brothers, came to visit me with some other men who had just arrived from Judah.
I asked them about the Jews who had returned there from captivity and about how things were going in Jerusalem.
3 They said to me, “Things are not going well for those who returned to the province of Judah.
They are in great trouble and disgrace.
The wall of Jerusalem has been torn down, and the gates have been destroyed by fire.”
· Trouble and disgrace
o For the wall to be still down after all these years was a disgrace to the People and to God!
o They were vulnerable to attach and capture
o The wall was a sign of strength
o Therefore, the people were perceived as weak
· Surrounding nations wanted the land and they had no way to protect themselves!

As we look at the Leader Nehemiah
· What is the main thing to him?
What was the first thing he did?
4 When I heard this, I sat down and wept.
In fact, for days I mourned, fasted, and prayed to the God of heaven.
· The first thing Nehemiah did was pray.
o He did not seek the opinions of others
o He did not make an assessment of the damage
o He did not sit down to compare pros and cons
o He did not write out a step by step plan.
All these things are good
But they are not the main thing!
They are not the first step to being a Good leader!

· A true leader is one who is not self-sufficient, self-satisfied, or self-righteous.
On the contrary, he knows his need and is ready to humble himself before the One who alone is sufficient for it.
