In David McCullough’s book on John Adams, he tells of the time our second President was living in Philadelphia. John and Abigail Adams befriended a little boy named James Prince and would often have him over to their home. They cared for this boy and provided food, clothing, and other necessities for him. But when they went to enroll him in the local school, the school refused to allow him to attend for racial reasons. The Adams were upset and Mrs. Adams demanded that the boy be allowed to attend. She said, “Is this the Christian principle of doing unto others as we would have others do to us? I hope that we shall all go to Heaven together!”
