Encouarged by the Faithfulness of God 2 Timothy 2:8-13

2 Timothy 2:8 ESV

8 Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel,

-raised = signifies the result of Christ’s resurrection

Romans 1:4 ESV

4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,

-offspring of David = He is the promised King, the Messiah that was prophesied to come

-my gospel = the gospel entrusted to Paul to preach

1 Timothy 1:11 ESV

11 in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted.

2 Timothy 2:9–10 ESV

9 for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound! 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

-criminal = same greek word in

Luke 23:32 ESV

32 Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him.

-harsh second imprisonment, the one before in Acts 24 his friends could come and go

-Therefore = back to v. 9

-elect = God’s people

-Paul suffered so that the gospel would go forth, he regrets nothing

2 Timothy 2:11–13 ESV

11 The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; 12 if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; 13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself.

-trustworthy saying

1 Timothy 1:15 ESV

15 The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.

1 Timothy 3:11 ESV

11 Their wives likewise must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, faithful in all things.

-1st two are positive actions

Romans 6:8 ESV

8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.

-died to self, receive eternal life, we have it now

John 5:24 ESV

24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.

-endure = stand ones ground

-possibly a reference to the 1000 year reign Revelation 20:1-6

Revelation 20:1–4 ESV

1 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain. 2 And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, 3 and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while. 4 Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

-negative actions

Matthew 10:33 ESV

33 but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.

-I do not believe it is a temporary denial, that in a moment of human negligence - Peter as an example

-denial that is permanent, have nothing to do with Jesus - Judas

-faithless, but God is faithful

-regardless of the faithlessness of man and woman, God is always faithful, merciful, gracious

-The faithfulness of God is not dependent on our faithfulness
