Intro

All Good stories have a good progression
In our lives we like to see things that obviously progress
we have all been asked the dreaded questions especially for high schoolers whats next
Where will you go to school
What will you do during break
What do you want to be when you grow up
We like to know whats ahead and what is coming
This works the same way in our salvation
Whats next after the effectual calling of the Spirit
Whats happens then
What happens when our hearts respond to that call

The order of salvation

Justification upon believing
Adoption
Sanctification
Q33. What is justification? Justification is the act of God's free grace by which He pardons all our sins and accepts us as righteous in His sight. He does so only because He counts the righteousness of Christ as ours. Justification is received by faith alone.
Scriptures: Romans 3:23-24; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Galatians 2:16
Romans 3:23–24 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV
21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Galatians 2:16 ESV
16 yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.

Justification

Happens immediately
Once we respond to the call of God in our life and call upon Jesus as our savior we will be forgiven our sins
There isnt some waiting period where God waits for us to clean ourselves up
It isnt ok you believe but let me give it a few weeks and see if its real
Can’t be achieved apart from a Work of God in our life
Justification is not something we do on our own
This is a result of the effectual call of the spirit
Cant be taken away
This isnt something we loose because we mess up
It also isnt a pass to continue to sin
Once we are justified we should act like it
Its like having 100% to start the semester then working to keep it there
Deeper than this because once we are justified we are actually adopted
Q34. What is adoption? Adoption is the act of God's free grace by which we become His sons with all the rights and privileges of being His.
Scriptures 1 John 3:1; John 1:12-13; Romans 8:15-17
1 John 3:1 ESV
1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
John 1:12–13 ESV
12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
Romans 8:15–17 ESV
15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

Adoption

This is the next step in the christian process
Justification having Christ righteousness imputed counted to us allows us access to adoption
To be called a Son or daughter of God
We now act like this
In this family we
This comes with great joy but not because we are adopted into some rich family and life will now be easy
We are secure in our place being called a son fo the most high
We belong to our heavenly father now
So no matter what happens
we have security in him
We were given a new sign and a new clothes and a new address
Q35. What is sanctification? Sanctification is the work of God's free grace by which our whole person is made new in the image of God, and we are made more and more able to become dead to sin and alive to righteousness.
Ezekiel 36:25–27 ESV
25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. 26 And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.
Philippians 2:12–13 ESV
12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
Ephesians 4:23–24 ESV
23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
1 Peter 2:23–24 ESV
23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
Romans 6:4 ESV
4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
Ephesians 2:10 ESV
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Sanctification

The final step that will take a lifetime
This is our becoming more and more like Christ
Realizing our sin repenting from it because thats not how heirs behave
And growing
As with much of this its not a work that we do on our own
We dont sit and say ok this is what I need to change ok I’m going to do better
NO the spirit convicts us and gives us the power to change
Notice it is God at work
But we are not off the hook
Its something that we must work out
We must work at
Yes God is working but our obedience and humility are required
The true mark of Sanctification is humilty
It has been said that pride is at the heart of all sin
Maybe man trying to be God is
But when we put ourselves second and we look to him we realize how badly we need him
The leaper in Mark Mark 1
Mark 1:40–42 ESV
40 And a leper came to him, imploring him, and kneeling said to him, “If you will, you can make me clean.” 41 Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.” 42 And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean.
