How to Church and Living the Vibrant Christian Life

Notes
Transcript
Ephesians 4:1–6 ESV
I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
Point of Sermon
Living a Vibrant Christian Life with the People of God
Purpose of this Passage?
To maintain unity/ oneness
Main Question
How does a vibrant Christian life with the People of God UNLOCK the Christian/ Human Experience
Questions
In general who are the people of God?
What are the people of God called to? / What is our calling?
How do we do what we be called to?
Why must we do it? Why is it Important? Why do we do it with the people of God?
What is the one hope that BELONGS to the CALL? - Our hope is in the finished work of Christ
Why was one so important? - could this be a Judeo issue of polytheistic thinking????
Observations
Jesus speaking of oneness in John 17
Bible verses on unity/ staying together/ being one
Missional theology is an outworking of “the good news of God’s love, incarnated in the witness of a community, for the sake of the world.”18 Therefore the practice of theology from a missional perspective has as its goal “not only greater knowledge of God and God’s purposes but more reflective and intelligent participation in those purposes.”19 Of particular importance in the understanding and living out of God’s purposes in the world is the call to love one another in response to the love of God: “Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us” (1 Jn 4:11–12 niv).
"you" is the church of Ephesus, the people of God. there is distinction here, because this is not a message for everyone but for God's people.
The people of God are being urged/ compelled to
Paul uses the word "one" 8 times in the 6 verses
Paul tells us we are to walk in the manner/ way of our calling by 1. Humilty and gentleness 2. Patience 3. Bearing with one another in love 4. Be EAGER to maintain the UNITY of the Spirit in the bond of peace. ( I think he is saying we maintain the things of God by allowing the HS to show us the way of God and love will hold it all together- is love peace?? Colossians 3:14 )
Other Scripture
Colossians 3:11
Colossians 1:16
Romans 9:5
1 Corinthians 12:5-6
There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call. The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Eph 4:4.
Romans 12:5 talks about being one body in Christ and gifts. Ephesians 2:22 is whee he talks about being built together.
The one spirit Spirit is referenced at 1 Corinthians 12:13 and Philippians 1:27 (this passage also refences the manner)
Colossians 1:10 (greek word for walk is the pace of Jesus and how we are to go about our mission), 1 Thessalonians 2:12 also talks about walkin in a manner
Our differences are necessary and are welcomed under Christ. he is the main thing.
Language Work
one= single unit
unity= oneness
bond

4:2. After calling us to walk (live) worthy of our calling in Christ, Paul describes the character qualities of the person who lives as a prisoner of Christ.

This is the same walk that Jesus goes at.
Conduct ones life like Jesus was on mission at a walking pace
Interpretation/ Hunch
I think the church/ the people of God are called to express his perfect love as our mission by sharing the gospel which tells of God love for the earth.
God's people should be the best example of unity, but instead we seem to be the best example of division. Some of the people God has called me to love the hardest dont look like me, dont think like me, dont like the things i like, didnt have the same upbringing I had
We will be see whether for good or for bad for we are a city on a hill we cannot be hidden. Shouldnt our example/ mission be one fo the creator instead of the ruler of this world. (Matthew 5:14 )
When we we express Gods love in unity we mature into the fullness of who we are supposed to be, which strengthens and stabilizes us against every wind of opinion, man trying to achieve their own end, deceitful schemes. (Ephesians 4:12-16 )
There's something about doing stuff together. Every event I've ever gone to men's events, every Nation conferences, the campus you guys went probably experience something amazing when I was in college seeing all those young people together it's transformative since I belong somewhere and I believe people always trying to belong but we never quite fit like circles in a square peg or triangle peg we were designed to fit with God's people.
You can be around a lot of people, have friends, and still be lonely
We as humans are deeply wired for relationship but in the West we have a very individualized thought and it affects not just our relationships but how we treat others and what we think of others.
Know someone who is just eager to be perfect in Christ already. Can I just skip pst the work and hard stuff. i often time just think of my workout routine and wish cant I just click a button and look like Chris Hemsworth.
Language/ culture/ money barriers can create tension
Ephesians 4:3 ESV
eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
John 13:35 our example to the world
Our nation to see love, and unity because they are intent on ripping themselves apart in the name of their forced unity
Exhortation
You might be thinking well I'm giving my life to Christ I'm trying this Christian thing out but it doesn't seem like there's any benefits. I mean the holy Spirit is amazing Jesus is great what does that do for my everyday. Well we're to do it with others who have called. A vibrant Christian Life is not fulfilled or even seen in solidarity. The missing piece to your Christian experience is unlocked when you are in life with the Christian body. Something about Sunday mornings even for an introvert when I see all these people and I hear all the stories if something electrifying in this room with all the people of God singing hallelujah that lifts my soul is my spirit.

Unity and fellowship of church
Synopsis
The church is one in essence, because it is founded on one gospel, united to one Lord and indwelt by one Spirit. Its unity is under constant threat because of the tendency to division that is inherent in fallen humanity, and needs to be continually maintained and actively expressed in fellowship.
The unity of the church
The church is one
Ro 12:5

1 Corinthians 12:20 (ESV) — 20 As it is, there are many parts, yet one body.
Ephesians 4:25 (ESV) — 25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.
The church transcends all barriers
Col 3:11

John 10:16 (ESV) — 16 And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.
Acts 10:28–29 (ESV) — 28 And he said to them, “You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a Jew to associate with or to visit anyone of another nation, but God has shown me that I should not call any person common or unclean. 29 So when I was sent for, I came without objection. I ask then why you sent for me.”
Acts 10:47 (ESV) — 47 “Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?”
Acts 15:8–9 (ESV) — 8 And God, who knows the heart, bore witness to them, by giving them the Holy Spirit just as he did to us, 9 and he made no distinction between us and them, having cleansed their hearts by faith.
Galatians 3:28 (ESV) — 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Ephesians 2:14–16 (ESV) — 14 For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility 15 by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, 16 and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility.
Ephesians 3:6 (ESV) — 6 This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.
The church’s unity reflects the unity within the Trinity
Eph 4:4–6 The unity of the church is built around the persons of the Trinity: one Spirit, one Lord, one Father.
Ephesians 4:4–6 (ESV) — 4 There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

Acts 2:44–45 (ESV) — 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.
See also Ac 4:32; Ac 4:34–37; Ac 11:27–30; Ro 15:26; 1 Co 16:1–2; 2 Co 8:2–5; 2 Co 8:13–14; 2 Co 9:13; Php 4:14–18
Acts 4:32 (ESV) — 32 Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common.
Acts 4:34–37 (ESV) — 34 There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold 35 and laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. 36 Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus, 37 sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
Acts 11:27–30 (ESV) — 27 Now in these days prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. 28 And one of them named Agabus stood up and foretold by the Spirit that there would be a great famine over all the world (this took place in the days of Claudius). 29 So the disciples determined, every one according to his ability, to send relief to the brothers living in Judea. 30 And they did so, sending it to the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Saul.

2 Corinthians 8:2–5 (ESV) — 2 for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. 3 For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, 4 begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints— 5 and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us.
2 Corinthians 8:13–14 (ESV) — 13 For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, but that as a matter of fairness 14 your abundance at the present time should supply their need, so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness.

Philippians 4:14–18 (ESV) — 14 Yet it was kind of you to share my trouble. 15 And you Philippians yourselves know that in the beginning of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church entered into partnership with me in giving and receiving, except you only. 16 Even in Thessalonica you sent me help for my needs once and again. 17 Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that increases to your credit. 18 I have received full payment, and more. I am well supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God.

Philippians 4:14 (ESV) — 14 Yet it was kind of you to share my trouble.
Hebrews 10:33–34 (ESV) — 33 sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. 34 For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one.
Hebrews 13:3 (ESV) — 3 Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body.

Welcoming former opponents
Ac 9:26–27; Ga 2:9; 2 Co 2:5–8
Acts 9:26–27 (ESV) — 26 And when he had come to Jerusalem, he attempted to join the disciples. And they were all afraid of him, for they did not believe that he was a disciple. 27 But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles and declared to them how on the road he had seen the Lord, who spoke to him, and how at Damascus he had preached boldly in the name of Jesus.

Divisions in the church
Causes of division in the NT church
Personal ambition:
Mk 9:34; Mk 10:35–41
Mark 9:34 (ESV) — 34 But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest.
Mark 10:35–41 (ESV) — 35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” 36 And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” 37 And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” 38 Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized, 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” 41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John.
Ethnic tension:
Ac 6:1
Acts 6:1 (ESV) — 1 Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution.
Differences of opinion:
Ac 15:37–40; Php 4:2
Acts 15:37–40 (ESV) — 37 Now Barnabas wanted to take with them John called Mark. 38 But Paul thought best not to take with them one who had withdrawn from them in Pamphylia and had not gone with them to the work. 39 And there arose a sharp disagreement, so that they separated from each other. Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed away to Cyprus, 40 but Paul chose Silas and departed, having been commended by the brothers to the grace of the Lord.
Philippians 4:2 (ESV) — 2 I entreat Euodia and I entreat Syntyche to agree in the Lord.
Troublesome heretical leaders:
Ro 16:17; Jud 19
Romans 16:17 (ESV) — 17 I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them.
Jude 19 (ESV) — 19 It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit.
Partisan spirit:
1 Co 1:11–12; 1 Co 3:3–4
1 Corinthians 1:11–12 (ESV) — 11 For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. 12 What I mean is that each one of you says, “I follow Paul,” or “I follow Apollos,” or “I follow Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.”
1 Corinthians 3:3–4 (ESV) — 3 for you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way? 4 For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not being merely human?
1 Co 6:1–6 litigation and disputes
1 Corinthians 6:1–6 (ESV) — 1 When one of you has a grievance against another, does he dare go to law before the unrighteous instead of the saints? 2 Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to try trivial cases? 3 Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more, then, matters pertaining to this life! 4 So if you have such cases, why do you lay them before those who have no standing in the church? 5 I say this to your shame. Can it be that there is no one among you wise enough to settle a dispute between the brothers, 6 but brother goes to law against brother, and that before unbelievers?
Greed:
1 Co 11:18; 1 Co 11:20–21; Jas 4:1–3
1 Corinthians 11:18 (ESV) — 18 For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you. And I believe it in part,
1 Corinthians 11:20–21 (ESV) — 20 When you come together, it is not the Lord’s supper that you eat. 21 For in eating, each one goes ahead with his own meal. One goes hungry, another gets drunk.
James 4:1–3 (ESV) — 1 What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? 2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.
Warnings against divisions in the church
1 Co 1:10
1 Corinthians 1:10 (ESV) — 10 I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.
See also Ro 12:16; Ro 16:17; 2 Co 12:20; Eph 4:31; Jas 4:11
Romans 12:16 (ESV) — 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight.
Romans 16:17 (ESV) — 17 I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them.
2 Corinthians 12:20 (ESV) — 20 For I fear that perhaps when I come I may find you not as I wish, and that you may find me not as you wish—that perhaps there may be quarreling, jealousy, anger, hostility, slander, gossip, conceit, and disorder.
Ephesians 4:31 (ESV) — 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.
James 4:11 (ESV) — 11 Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.
Acceptable differences in the church
In secondary matters of conscience, Christians are to respect rather than judge each other. These things need not impair the essential unity that is in Christ:
Ro 14:1–3; Ro 14:5–6; 1 Co 8:9–13
Romans 14:1–3 (ESV) — 1 As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. 2 One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. 3 Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him.
Romans 14:5–6 (ESV) — 5 One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God.
1 Corinthians 8:9–13 (ESV) — 9 But take care that this right of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. 10 For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating in an idol’s temple, will he not be encouraged, if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols? 11 And so by your knowledge this weak person is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died. 12 Thus, sinning against your brothers and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. 13 Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble.
In varieties of spiritual gifts:
1 Co 12:4–6; 1 Co 12:14–25; Ga 2:7
1 Corinthians 12:4–6 (ESV) — 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.
1 Corinthians 12:14–25 (ESV) — 14 For the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15 If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? 18 But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 19 If all were a single member, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, 24 which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, 25 that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another.
Galatians 2:7 (ESV) — 7 On the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been entrusted with the gospel to the circumcised
Necessary divisions in the church
Between the true gospel and heretical alternatives:
2 Co 11:2–6; 2 Co 11:13–15; Ga 1:6–9; Col 2:8; Col 2:16–19; 1 Ti 4:1–6; 1 Jn 2:18–19; 2 Jn 9–11; Jud 18–20
2 Corinthians 11:2–6 (ESV) — 2 For I feel a divine jealousy for you, since I betrothed you to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ. 3 But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. 4 For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough. 5 Indeed, I consider that I am not in the least inferior to these super-apostles. 6 Even if I am unskilled in speaking, I am not so in knowledge; indeed, in every way we have made this plain to you in all things.
2 Corinthians 11:13–15 (ESV) — 13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.
Galatians 1:6–9 (ESV) — 6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.
Colossians 2:8 (ESV) — 8 See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.
Colossians 2:16–19 (ESV) — 16 Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. 17 These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ. 18 Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind, 19 and not holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.
1 Timothy 4:1–6 (ESV) — 1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, 2 through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, 3 who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5 for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer. 6 If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed.
1 John 2:18–19 (ESV) — 18 Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.
2 John 9–11 (ESV) — 9 Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, 11 for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works.
Jude 18–20 (ESV) — 18 They said to you, “In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions.” 19 It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit. 20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit,
Between those truly committed to Jesus Christ, and those apparently part of the church but living sinful lives:
1 Co 5:9–10; 2 Th 3:6; 1 Ti 6:3–5; 2 Ti 3:2–9; 2 Pe 1:20–21; 2 Pe 2:1–3; Re 2:20; Re 2:24; Re 3:1; Re 3:4
1 Corinthians 5:9–10 (ESV) — 9 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world.
2 Thessalonians 3:6 (ESV) — 6 Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us.
1 Timothy 6:3–5 (ESV) — 3 If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness, 4 he is puffed up with conceit and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions, 5 and constant friction among people who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain.
2 Timothy 3:2–9 (ESV) — 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. 6 For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, 7 always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth. 8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith. 9 But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, as was that of those two men.
2 Peter 1:20–21 (ESV) — 20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
2 Peter 2:1–3 (ESV) — 1 But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3 And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.
Revelation 2:20 (ESV) — 20 But I have this against you, that you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and seducing my servants to practice sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols.
Revelation 2:24 (ESV) — 24 But to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who have not learned what some call the deep things of Satan, to you I say, I do not lay on you any other burden.
Revelation 3:1 (ESV) — 1 “And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: ‘The words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. “ ‘I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead.
Revelation 3:4 (ESV) — 4 Yet you have still a few names in Sardis, people who have not soiled their garments, and they will walk with me in white, for they are worthy.
Over essential gospel principles:
Ac 15:2; Ac 15:5–6; Ac 15:19; Ga 2:11
Acts 15:2 (ESV) — 2 And after Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and debate with them, Paul and Barnabas and some of the others were appointed to go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and the elders about this question.
Acts 15:5–6 (ESV) — 5 But some believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees rose up and said, “It is necessary to circumcise them and to order them to keep the law of Moses.” 6 The apostles and the elders were gathered together to consider this matter.
Acts 15:19 (ESV) — 19 Therefore my judgment is that we should not trouble those of the Gentiles who turn to God,
Galatians 2:11 (ESV) — 11 But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned.
