Introduction: Psalm 149 is a Psalm of praise. Psalm of Praise almost always starts with a call to praise.
Most Psalms of praise consist of one of three elements: may be to exhortation to sing to God, to praise, or to exalt God.
In Psalm 149 we see all three elements. In a Psalm of praise the main element to be praised is God.
We see in Psalm 149 Praise mentioned 4 times.
In fact, the Psalm starts out with Praising Jehovah and ends with Praising Jehovah.
First, we will see the Song (Psalm 149:1-3).
Second, we will see the Salvation (Psalm 149:4-5). Finally, we will see the Sword (Psalm 149:6-9).
Thesis: As Christians we should be singing our hearts out to God because He offers us salvation and a Sword to make us victorious.
I. We have a Song (Psalm 149:1-3).
a. 1A Praise ye the Lord. (Jehovah)
b. 1B Sing unto the Lord a new song.
i. Psalm 33:3, 96:1; 98:1; 144:9.
ii. We read of the children of Israel singing to God in Exodus 15 after God had delivered them from the Egyptian at the crossing of the red sea.
iii. We see after God delivered the children of Israel from captivity in Ezra 3:10-11 -10 they laid the foundation of the Temple!!!!
iv. Ezr 3:11 “And they sang together by course in praising and giving thanks unto the LORD; because he is good, for his mercy endureth for ever toward Israel. And all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid.”
v. As Christians we should sing unto the Lord for He has delivered us!!!
c. 1C Sing praise in the congregation of the saints.
i. Congregation- also referred to as the assembly.
ii. When we assemble we come together and sing spiritual songs which uplift us, encourages us, teaches us, and helps prepare us for our spiritual warfare.
d. 2A Sing and rejoice to the Maker.
i. This maker would most likely refer to God choosing and making Israel His chosen people. The children of Israel were Gods elect because the seed promise would come through them. This Psalm is no doubt messianic as we are about to see a king out of Zion, and vs 4 Salvation.
ii. The children of Israel are to praise God and rejoice for the fact that they are Gods chosen people, He is their maker. Therefore, sing unto Him this new song. Sing because He has delivered them from the Egyptians, from the enemies of the promise land, from the Babylonians.
e. 2B The Children of Zion sing and be joyful in their King.
i. Zion: Isaiah 2:3 For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the Word, of the Lord from Jerusalem.
ii. Joel 2:1 “Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand”
iii. Zec 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
iv. Mat 21:5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. --Hosana, Hosanna in the highest, they wanted to know who this was??
f. 3A Sing and praise His name in dance.
g. 3B Sing and praise to Him with the timbrel and harp.
i. The children of Israel were to sing because not only were they Gods chosen people, but God would bring a King greater than David to reign forever.
ii. They were to dance and sing and praise God, and I bet we all would be doing this as we just got out of Babylonian captivity and jumping with great joy.
iii. This however does not give us the authority to use mechanical instruments in worship, and if it did then it would have dancing with it. Music was something David brought in as we see in Amos 6:5, and we see David dancing and singing with Joy in 2 Sam 6:14-15 after bringing the Ark back to Jerusalem, however it led to his wife Michal despising him seeing him dance in front of other women.
iv. Psalm 150 deals with more instruments as well.
v. Eph 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
vi. Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
II. We have Salvation (Psalm 149:4-5).
a. 4A Jehovah takes pleasure in His people.
b. 4B Jehovah will beautify the meek with salvation.
i. Mat 5:5 “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.”
ii. The saints are His people, He loves them, He takes great pleasure in them.
iii. He will beautify them. When we hear of beautify, we think of a person putting on their fancy cloths, fixing their hair, and looking their best.
iv. God will beautify us in Salvation- He is going to cloth us with costly raiment: This could be referring to the clothing we are all waiting for:
v. 1Co 15:51-52 “Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.”
vi. 2Co 5:2-4 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life.
vii. Php 3:20-21 “For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body.”
c. 5A Let the saints be joyful in glory.
d. 5B Let them sing aloud upon their beds.
i. The saints are to be joyful because the fact we have a deliverer, we have a king, we have a savior to come, this is a reason for us to sing alone. Have you ever met a Christian who does not love to sing to God? As We see next we should praise the Lord because He makes us victorious.
III. We have a Sword (Psalm 149:6-9).
a. 6A Let the high praises of God be in their mouth.
b. 6B And a two-edged sword in their hand.
i. The their, is the saints!
ii. Christians are two carry their two-edge sword in their hand at all times.
iii. Eph 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
iv. Heb 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
c. 7A To execute vengeance upon the heathen and punishment upon the people.
i. Rom 12:18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
ii. Rom 12:19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
iii. We are to not take actual vengeance in our own hands but point people towards the Word of God which they will either obey and be saved by His vengeance or ignore and accept His vengeance to come.
d. 8A To bind their kings with chains and their nobles with fetters of iron.
e. 9A To execute upon them the Judgement written.
i. Eph 1:19-23 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,
ii. Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,
iii. Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:
iv. And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,
v. Which is his body”
1. Christ is over all kingdoms, nations, powers, and will excute judgement to all people. We know that every knee shall bow and confess Jesus. This includes kings and their nobles.
f. 9B This Honor have all the saints.
g. 9C Praise Ye Jehovah.
i. It is a honor to us to be able to take our sword and to go out into the world our battle field and fight for God. brethren we are at war. It however is a Spiritual warfare, and we must put on the full armor of God so we can remain standing no matter what the enemy throws at us. We get that armor from the Word. Praise God. Praise Jehovah because He had made each and every one of us in here victorious. We should be singing with gladness to God all the time. Just like our warriors go out to war with music to pump them up, we are to go out into the World with praises of God in our mouths to uplift us, to encourage us, we are encourage and uplifted because we know are victorious before the battle ever starts.
Conclusion: What a beautiful Psalm this is, it is a praise Psalm because God deserves all of our praise.
He has given us a King unlike any other King, one that is above all, one that offers us salvation. He has given us our weapon of warfare being the sword which is the Word of God that is sharper than any other sword able to pierce the soul and heart of man.
He has given us the honor to go out and execute vengeance, punishments, and judgements to all the people.
This is for us to go warn all the wrath that is to come using the Word of God.
Brethren we are to go out and warn the world of the great judgement day coming.
Our King will exercise their punishment if they have not obeyed.
For we know that every knee shall bow, and every person shall confess Him.
First, we saw the Song.
Second, we saw the Salvation.
Finally, we saw the Sword.
Have you been praising God all the time? Singing praises to Him?
