Matthew 9:35–38 NKJV
35 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. 36 But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. 37 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. 38 Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”
Meditate on the beauty of Jesus
The Title of My Message is the Eternal Gospel of the Messiah.
We are saved by putting our trust in Jesus Christ, the Messiah and His finished work on Calvary.
How were people saved in the Old Testament? Were they saved by works?
Hope (describe)
Faith
Repentance
Diagram here of faith in Messiah looking forward and backward.

The Promise of the Messiah.
The intermediate period that we should not miss, a period before the work of the cross, when Messiah Himself preached the Gospel of faith and Repentance.
The Lord Jesus lived the Gospel.
In living the Gospel, The Lord Jesus demonstrated:
Messiah’s work.
“Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages...”
Left no stone unturned.
John 9:4–5 NKJV
4 I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
Teaching
“teaching in their synagogues”
b. Preaching
“preaching the gospel of the kingdom”
c. Healing
“healing every sickness and every disease among the people”
This work continues. The role of the church.
The covering of the church. There are no lone ranger Christians.
2. Messiah’s Heart.
Matthew 9:36 NKJV
36 But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.
Ministry of compassion
Food bank - explain the new work.
Why was Jesus moved with compassion? Was it because of the ailments… (talk).. stems from the spiritual needs.
a. They were weary and scattered.
People walk aimlessly in life, with no purpose
b. Like sheep having no shepherd.
They do not know the Good Shepherd.
John 10:11–14 NKJV
11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. 12 But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. 13 The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own.
The Lord is the One Who truly cares. Beware of the hireling. Talk of security.
3. Messiah’s Dream.
Matthew 9:37–38 NKJV
37 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. 38 Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”
Three things:
a. The opportunity
“The harvest is plentiful”
b. The challenge
“The laborers are few”
c. The mandate
“Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest”
The mandate is to participate in the work of the harvest. Not just to pray - the disciples are already on board.. They were sent in the very next chapter, Chapter 10.
For more laborers
He also worked on the discipleship and training of His disciples.
That we bear much fruit, fruit that will last
Messiah’s work did not end in His ministry. God still need to address the greater issue of sin of mankind Messiah’s Greater work addressed the judgement of God. Man is sinful and God is holy. The cross.
John 12:32–33 NKJV
32 And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.” 33 This He said, signifying by what death He would die.
Diagram of the Old and New Testament and the cross.
I love this passage in Ephesians 2 because this is the one that shows the unifying work of Christ of the Old and the New Testaments. (explain while reading)
Ephesians 2:14–18 NKJV
14 For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, 15 having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, 16 and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity. 17 And He came and preached peace to you who were afar off and to those who were near. 18 For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.
That brothers and sisters, is the eternal Gospel, put your trust in Messiah.
