A Fruitful Life

​
EOT-Jesus told his disciples the way for them to be fruitful disciples is to abide in him.
EOS-We must intentionally abide in Jesus.

Be fruitful and multiply.
Heather’s Volleyball number in college was 13.
Kind of a scary number right.
Friday the 13th.
But what I learned was she wanted 13 kids.
She literally took Genesis 1:28, not just spiritually, but literally and physically.

What is the chief purpose of man? Why were you created?
or to put it another way:
Why were you put on this earth?
Some really smart guys said it like this. We were put on this earth:
To enjoy and glorify God.

We think we will glorify God by doing stuff for God. But the reality is we cannot glorify God without enjoying God.
If you could only do one thing as a Christian what would be the most important thing you can do?
Is it showing up on Sunday?
Is it reading your Bible?
Praying?
Giving?
No, The greatest thing we can do is abide in Jesus.
Today I want us to leave here with a passion, a desire to enjoy God like never before.
Question to ponder:
Do you enjoy God?

Today I want us to walk out of here having your greatest priority to be to abide with Jesus.

We must intentionally abide in Jesus because:

1. God does everything he can to make us fruitful (1-3).

God wants you to be fruitful more than you want to be fruitful.
Or to put it another way God wants you to succeed more than you want to succeed.
Isn’t that freeing. When many grow up with these terribly negative views of God he wants you to be all you were created to be.
John 15:1 NASB95
“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.
This is the last I AM statement in John. Jesus has made it extremely clear that he is God.

I am the bread of life (6:35)

I am the light of the world (8:12)

I am the gate (10:7, 9)

I am the good shepherd (10:11, 14)

I am the resurrection and the life (11:25)

I am the way, the truth, and the life (14:6)

I am the true vine (15:1, 5)

This is exactly what God said to Moses.
Exodus 3:14 NASB95
God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”
In two parts of the trinity the Father and the son and they have two different roles in this analogy.
The Son is the vine and the father is the vinedresser.
Israel in the Old Testament Israel was God’s vine and God desired Israel to be fruitful and produce fruit but their fruit much of the time was rotten and degenerate. Jesus was making it clear he is the True Vine.
The other thing that I want us to see is that God the Father is the vinedresser.
The Heart of pruning: The Father’s Love
John 15:2 NASB95
“Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit.
I love how God is the perfect gardner always trying to lift us up and make us a beautiful picture of him. It may hurt.

What happens to the believer who bears no fruit? The Greek word airo can mean “to take away” or “to lift up.” Those who interpret it here as meaning to take away (in judgment), believe that either the believer loses his or her salvation, or the believer loses his or her reward, and possibly even his or her life, or the opportunity to serve the Lord. Those who interpret airo to mean “to lift up,” believe that these branches get special attention from the vinedresser so they will bear fruit in the future.

The second alternative seems better, since in the spring, vinedressers both lift up unfruitful branches and prune (or cleanse, Gr. kathairo) fruitful branches of grapevines. Cleansing the branches involves washing off deposits of insects, moss, and other parasites that tend to infest the plants. Jesus gave this teaching in the spring, when farmers did what He described in this verse.

Some take this verse to means that if you are not producing fruit you are not a real Christian.
I take it to mean to lift up.
Every Christian was created to bear fruit
Christians do not all bear the same kind of fruit or the same amount of fruit
There are seasons that are more fruitful than others
There are seasons where Judas a false Christian looked on the outside more fruitful than other Christians.
What are the implications of this:
It means that even in those seasons when it seems hard: That God is preparing you for fruit,
Use examples:
Michael-When you told me yourself that you were far from God-God was lifting you up, taking the diseases off you so that if you would abide in him you would be even more fruitful in the future.
I could go through every one in this room, but in those seasons, God was preparing you.
The Security to bear fruit!
John 15:3 NASB95
“You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.

“In chapter 8 [v. 31] we are to abide in the Word. In chapter 14 [v. 23] we are to obey the Word. In this chapter we are cleansed by the Word.”

When we believe in Jesus we are cleansed. What I love about this is that it frees us up to bear fruit.
We are declared forgiven the moment we believe in the gospel.
We are clean because of what Christ has done for us.
Illustration-Pruning can be difficult at times. My dad would pick us up. He was hard on us, my brother and I were joking recently and talked about in HS we would alway secretly be praying mom would pick us up. You only scored 15. Dad was tough on us in basketball because he wanted us successful. I am the same way on my kids. But kids: Why because I want them to be successful. If this is how sinful fathers are, how much more is our heavenly father. But the great difference basketball is small potatoes compared to spiritual fruit. I went onto being a really good basketball player and I attribute so much of that to my dad, who loved, it did not always feel lovely. How much more can we excel at fruit bearing because of the security we have with our father the vinedresser.
Application:
Israel in their minds was the true Vines.
Are we not in the same way much like them, we think it is all about us.
We have to stop trying to be in control and have to attach ourselves to the true vine.
Do you believe that God wants you to be fruitful?
If not why not?
Maybe some of you here did not have a loving father.
Maybe you have some false misconceptions about Christianity.

2. growth is not accidental (4-6)

Abiding is commanded
John 15:4 NASB95
“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me.
This is clearly commanded for us to do.
We have to be deliberate in it

What does abiding look like-It means being in constant fellowship with Jesus.
We cannot bear fruit if we do not abide.
John 15:5 NASB95
“I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.
The only way we can produce Real fruit (vs Phony Fruit) is if we abide
Have an illustration: Some real fruit and some phony fruit. See if someone would eat the phony fruit.

Obviously it is impossible for a branch to bear any fruit if it has no contact with the life-giving vine. Many unbelievers appear to bear the fruit of godly character and conduct, but their fruit is phony. It is similar to plastic fruit that one could hang on a tree to give it the appearance of being healthy and productive. It is natural, though not inevitable, that a branch that has vital connection with the vine bear some fruit. The way to bear much fruit is for the branch to maintain unhindered fellowship with the vine, by allowing the vine to have its way with the branch. The alternative would be resisting the Holy Spirit’s work by neglecting and disobeying God.

What is the fruit that it is talking about:
I think we have to start with the fruit of the spirit.
Who knows what the fruit of the spirit is: Love, joy, peace ....
Isn’t this the amazing thing about the gospel-it turns the unloving person into a loving person.. So on and so on.
John 15:6 NASB95
“If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned.

Many interpreters have taken verse 6 as an exposition of verse 2. However, the viticulture process that Jesus described in verse 6 took place in the fall, whereas the process He mentioned in verse 2 happened in the spring. In the fall, the vinedresser would prune (Gr. kathairo) the vines for the winter by cutting off the dead wood. He would not cut off the unfruitful branches that could produce grapes the next season but only the branches that did not have a healthy connection to the vine. The point of the verse is that branches with other serious problems, not just non-fruit-bearing branches (v. 2), also experience pruning.

3. God’s glory is on the line (7-11)

When we abide in Jesus their are some results.
Prayer are answered
The fruit of prayer!
John 15:7 NASB95
“If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

This verse has also been a stumbling block to some sincere Christians. It appears to be a blanket promise to grant any request that any disciple may make. Really it is a blanket promise to grant any request that an abiding disciple may make. An abiding disciple will ask for only those things that are in harmony with, or subject to, God’s will—like Jesus did. The wishes of abiding disciples are the same as Jesus’ wishes. To ask anything else would make the praying believer a non-abiding disciple.

“This astounding command and promise … is not without conditions and limitations. It involves such intimate union and harmony with Christ that nothing will be asked out of accord with the mind of Christ and so of the Father.”

example when Jesus said not your will but my will be done.
John 12:27-28 ““Now My soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. “Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came out of heaven: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.””
I challenge myself if I challenge you to prayer prayers like this.
Matthew 9:35-38 “Jesus was going through all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness. Seeing the people, He felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and dispirited like sheep without a shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. “Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.””
Abiding in Jesus is scary because you start praying prayers like this.
Just recently God convicted my heart. My boys were going through some difficulties with a strength coach, and I wanted to confront the guy. But as I prayed through it I said God grow my boys through this. Teach them how to be men and stand up for themselves, allow me to give my boys a Godly mindset that they should consider it all joy when they go through trials of many kinds.
When we abide it changes the way we pray and God begins to answer prayers.
We prove to be his disciples
John 15:8 NASB95
“My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.
Are men’s group is studying the book of James this semester and something we talked about at our last Bible Study is that tests are not good. Passing tests are good. If we will abiding their are some results that will happen in our life.
One of the problems is that Christians are created to bear fruit, but some seem to have little or no passion to do it.

“The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians: who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, walk out the door, and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.”

This is one of the greatest problems in the church today: genuine Christians who make little or no attempt to follow God’s will for their lives. However, the presence of fruit in a believer’s life shows others that a disciple really does possess eternal life.

When we abide we pass the tests and we prove to be his disciples.

“Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love. “If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.
If you are not obeying God right now, if I am not obeying God right now I know what the problem is. I am not _____. Abiding!
An obeying problem is an abiding problem.

John 15:11 NASB95
“These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.
God does not just want to give us a teaspoon of joy he wants to give us overflowing joy.
If you are not experiencing joy, we know what the problem is-You are not abiding.
