4 While he was with them, he commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for the Father’s promise. “Which,” he said, “you have heard me speak about; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit in a few days.” 6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, are you restoring the kingdom to Israel at this time?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
1. God has a plan, we are commanded to fulfill it (V.4-5)
1. God has a plan, we are commanded to fulfill it (V.4-5)
God had commanded them to not leave Jerusalem.
When it refers to the Father’s promise in this passage it is refers to the gift of the holy spirit that would soon come.
2. We don’t have to fully understand the way in which God will work, but we have to have faith that he will work (V.6-7)

a. Restoration of the kingdom of Israel was something for which all first-century Jews longed. People believed that the Messiah would accomplish this restoration.
b. We often want it NOW. We want to understand God’s plan now. We want to have glory in the seen, but God has a plan. He may work in a way that we don’t understand, but we know that God delivers more than what we want. God delivers what we need.
3. We are witnesses of God’s power through God’s power (V.8)
3. We are witnesses of God’s power through God’s power (V.8)
18 Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
a. God’s plan for his disciples to receive power from the holy spirit and in Chapter 2 to preach at pentecost and see great revival comes to fruition.
Directly following this passage, the ascension takes place.
In many ways this kicks off the calling of the disciples and every Christian from then until now to go into all the nations and preach the gospel! The church is a community of believers that actively witnesses to their faith in Jesus.
We as individual believers,
We as the local church,
We as the global body of Christ..
are called to share God’s power through God’s power and we do that by living out the great commission.
We are called to be faithful and commissioned.
Look for opportunities to share the gospel in your current context. Sometimes God has you right where he wants you to reach people you wouldn’t think he would want you to reach, but through his power you can point others to Christ.
