John’s Calling
— Take a look at Verse 29 again
If you are a highlighter or underliner or “circle-r” This one is VERY important
— In this one sentence we have the essence of the whole “Christian” message
— “Saw Jesus” -
— Jesus walked towards John
— AND SAID!!
“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
— This is one of many passages that uses imagery, illustration and foreshadowing to prepare the way of the Lord.
— The idea of imagery of a “lamb” is very powerful.
Jesus was called the “lamb of God”
— The Jews have been over everything and into everything for 1000’s of years.
— As a result of that a whole industry was born… The breeding and birthing of a particular type and color for a lamb.
Jesus did not appreciate the Pharisee’s response...
God did NOT intend for the buying and selling of animals for sacrifice.
— You see “a sacrifice” was suppose to remind us that sin is costly… In this case the “covering” of sin was supposed to give pause, reflection and conviction.
— The whole of society was bound to a system, a legal system that God gave to point THE WORLD to their need of a SAVIOR.
This they missed completely!!!
— You see as you read the scripture in some of the 28 different translations you find sometimes dramatic language surrounding the Jews.
— They “missed” it, Jesus came to them in the deafness and hardness of their hearts.
POINT #1 - Don’t be deaf!
— Listen to the scripture as it’s read or on the page or during a radio or television program
— Listen to others in your tribe!
— The very same Holy Spirit that came at Jesus Baptism.
Simply as an example to others to follow Him.
— Hold on to the faith and baptism of your childhood it will serve you well.
For human beings, regeneration [for salvation, From sin & corruption] is the only answer
— Regeneration is essential for participation in the kingdom of God.
— Forgiveness of sin is NOT something we do, God forgives sin and chooses to remember it no more.
--In fact… as far as the East is from the West God is in the “forgiveness business”
Let’s move on to John 1 Verse 30
— John explains that the one coming after me ‘has surpassed me because he was before me’.
— Jesus came ‘after’ John in that his ministry for the most part followed John’s.
— When John added that Jesus surpasses him because he was before him, it looks like an allusion to Jesus’ pre-existence as the Word.
— However, it is unlikely that John was aware of His preexistence.
— He may simply have meant that Jesus had always been greater than him even though he was born six months later than him.
— There was a time when John did NOT recognize the Christ.
When John said “I myself did not know him.”
— John was doing the best that he could, baptizing and preparing the way for Jesus to come and to circumcise their hearts.
John’s Sole Mission...
— John’s sole mission to the temple, Judaism, to ALL of EVERYONE was that
—“You, Jews and holders of the laws” read your scrolls and they will agree with me.
— So Rome left the laws that were not working and added many more so as to compete with the Jews at their game
— This was the Pentecost moment.
We don’t know if John or others were in Jerusalem and were eye witnesses
— Of course John did NOT “see” the Spirit.
The Spirit is “pneuma” or like a blowing wind.
What John likely experienced was the results of the coming of the Holy Spirit.
POINT #2 - Be ready… Be discipled, be willing to share your faith
--Discipleship is the process of devoting oneself to a teacher to learn from and become more like them.
-0---For the Christian, this refers to the process of learning the teachings of Jesus and following after his example in obedience through the power of the Holy Spirit.
— Discipleship not only involves the process of becoming a disciple but of making other disciples through ;the sharing of what we do have.
— Through teaching and evangelism.
John Chapter 1 Vs.
33
— There was a “formula”
— When you see the Spirit descending and remaining,
— Our responsibility, the formula on our part is something like this
— Read, read again, continue reading, studying how this book, the Bible gets it’s power.
YOU MUST STUDY THE WORD, IN SEASON AND OUT OF SEASON
Finally John 1.34
— John has seen, heard and given witness to The Christ,
— In that climate, with vastly different values, the people were scared.
— Some rolled over and did not fight the Romans they just agreed to use the propaganda that was available that diminished the person and work of Christ.
Let’s review.

POINT#3 “Final Question”
— How is that we are left here to suffer the consequences of our sin… Waiting, sometimes years to bring those experiences to light
— Don’t ignore those thoughts and actions… See a professional.
— The final thing that I want for you, your kiddos, our community.
Is this… I want you all to grow up with the fear [reverence] of God.
— I want to see you turning over a new leaf.
Let’s pray...
