Can you save yourself?

Have you ever been told “whatever you set your mind to, you can accomplish?”
Do you think that holds true?
You cannot save yourself, but God has given you what is needed to be saved
What does mindset mean?
(N) the established set of attitudes held by someone
What types of things can we set our mind on? Are all of them healthy, physically or spiritually?
This morning we are looking at minding our mindset, for when we do we have the mindset of Christ
Philippians 2:5 NASB95
5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,
When we have a new mindset, that of Christ, we have new results, attitude and confidence in our destination.
In Christ there is no condemnation
ROm8:1 “1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
We are free from the spirit of law of sin and death
Rom8:2 “2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.”
The possession, indwelling of the Spirit makes all the difference. As mentioned before this chapter is all about the Spirit and the Christian. The Spirit gives the Christian a new mindset when coupled with the Word of God.
This morning we will see what the right mindset does.
Words to remember
It’s all Greek to me, but important words to understand.
Phroneo (verb) “to think, for or hold an opinion, to set one’s mind on, to be intent on (goes with 8:5).
Phronema (Noun) “way of thinking, mind-set, aim, aspiration” (goes with 8:6)
Phroneo (verb) “to think, for or hold an opinion, to set one’s mind on ro, to be intent on (goes with 8:5).5).5).
What you set your mindset on will impact your walking (8:4)
You may look at (Col3:1-4); Set your mind and walk like this
Or when you do this, this will happen (Consider Rom12:2)
(Scriptures used/referenced in introduction: (Php2:5; Rom8:1-2; Col3:1-4; Rom12:2)
Now I think it is time for us to look at the passage and then go from there.

Our Passage (Rom8:5-11)

Romans 8:5–6 NASB95
5 For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace,
Romans 8:7–8 NASB95
7 because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, 8 and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
Romans 8:9 NASB95
9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.
Romans 8:10 NASB95
10 If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness.
Romans 8:11 NASB95
11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
What do you notice in this passage?
Any key words in this passage?
Any words that we should define?
What is the theme of this passage?
What are the contrasts seen (v.5, 6-8)
Flesh, Spirit
Flesh is death, Spirit is life and peace
Flesh hostile to God; not pleasing to God (well, maybe not a contrast there).
Who is the “you” (vv. 9-11) and in what tense is this written, do you think it matters?
You- Christians
Present tense (active, indicative)
Yes it matters, for this has been in the past, is present now and is to be continuous.
If you do not have the Spirit, what are you (v.9)?
You are dead
If the Spirit is within you, what do you have (v.11)?
You have life through the Spirit who dwells in you.
So, again, do you think what we set our mind on, our mind-set matters?
Learning from the passage

The futility of trying to please God in the flesh.

People can set their minds of the things of the flesh which are contrary to the Spirit.
Paul give an easy way to discern if we are walking in flesh or the Spirit. How? by your mind-set.
The mind is the strategic battleground where the flesh and the Spirit fight.
Not all things in the battle are overly evil, some have good intentions, but are not God’s intentions, such as with Peter.
Matthew 16:23 NASB95
23 But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.”
Carnally (fleshly) minded brings death; but walking in the Spirit brings life and peace.
The carnal mind is enmity against God.
The carnal wants to look past (Gal5:24)
Galatians 5:24 NASB95
24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
Spurgeon says it like this, lean in and listen to this quote.
“It is not black, but blackness; it is not at enmity, but enmity itself; it is not corrupt, but corruption; it is not rebellious, it is rebellion, it is not wicked, it is wickedness itself. The heart though it be deceitful, is positively deceit; it is evil in the concrete, sin in the essence, it is the distillation, to quintessence of all the things that are vile; it is not envious against God, it is envy; it is not at enmity, it is actual enmity.”
Futility: It is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.
How could it be subject? We can try to live a good life, doing good, being good, but we have the wrong standard. We think it is we who do it, and not God and the Spirit.
In the flesh we cannot please God
Commentator Newell said regarding (8:7)
“Perhaps no one test of Scripture more completely sets forth the hideously lost state of man after the flesh.”

Christians are empowered to live in the Spirit

Romans 8:9 NCV
9 But you are not ruled by your sinful selves. You are ruled by the Spirit, if that Spirit of God really lives in you. But the person who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Christ.
Romans 8:10 NCV
10 Your body will always be dead because of sin. But if Christ is in you, then the Spirit gives you life, because Christ made you right with God.
Romans 8:11 NCV
11 God raised Jesus from the dead, and if God’s Spirit is living in you, he will also give life to your bodies that die. God is the One who raised Christ from the dead, and he will give life through his Spirit that lives in you.
You are not of the flesh if the Spirit lives in you.
The Spirit is given to each and every believer when they are baptized for forgiveness of sins. They are born again, raised to walk in the newness of life.
Again turning to what Newell said on this:
“Many sincere people are yet spiritually under John the Baptist’s ministry of repentance. Their state is practically that of the struggle of Romans-7, where neither Christ nor the Holy Spirit is mentioned, but only a quickened and undelivered soul in struggle under a sense of ‘duty,’ not a sense of full acceptance in Christ and the sealing by the Holy Spirit.”
Anyone who does not have the Spirit does not belong to Him.
No Spirit, no Christ, no Christ, no heaven, no heaven to eternal life with God.
There is no such thing as “spirit filled” and “non spirit filled.” Either you are or you are not His.
Scriptures of comfort (Eph5:18; Jn7:37-39)
Ephesians 5:18 NASB95
18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,
We are to be filled with the Spirit, not spirits. He does the filling, not us!
(TURN WITH ME TO JN7:37-39, PLEASE)
John 7:37 NASB95
37 Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.
John 7:38 NASB95
38 “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ ”
John 7:39 NASB95
39 But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
We have a little time this morning lets pull from this passage.
What is the instructions from Jesus on the last great day of the feast (v.37)?
What is the results of the one who comes (v.38)?
What is the living water as defined (v.39)?
And if Christ in you, your body (flesh) is dead because of sin.
Jesus through the Spirit lives in you, you crucify the flesh when you are born again, and raised up in a new life. No longer a slave to sin, but a slave to righteousness
You have been justified (5:1) you are not under any condemnation (8:1) you are raised up to walk in the newness of life (6:3); the old man is gone (2Cor5:17) and the new has come.
The old man had to die, so the new man can be born again and filled with the Spirit!

Mindset matters

God centered interest (Rom6:1-21; 1Pt1:14-15)
Dead to sin, alive to God
So, have the mindset of Christ and be holy in our behaviour
1 Peter 1:14–15 NASB95
14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, 15 but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior;
Christ like behavior had concern for righteousness (1Jn3:4-10; Rom6:1-21)
Practices righteousness (you can look up the passage) but in summary
Do not practice sin (used 8 times in that passage)
Knows God sent Christ to take away our sin.
Don’t be of the devil and sin, be of Christ and abide in Him and He in you.
Again, dead to sin, and live to Christ.
When we live for the Spirit we have a fuller, richer, stronger life (Rom5:1-5)
What do we have
Peace with God
Proven character
Hope
How do we have these things, through the Holy Spirit.
Live for the Spirit and the Spirit produces fruit (Gal5:22-23)
Galatians 5:22–23 NASB95
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
And the results
Philippians 4:7 NASB95
7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
