Part III
This evening we will have a short passage in Joel but it’s a big event in history.
It shall come to pass afterward… after what?
The after is after what we talked about last week.
After Israel’s judgment they repent, they return to the land, they don’t follow other gods any longer.
After the time of Nehemiah and the city and wall getting rebuilt we don’t see the problem of this complaint about worshiping false gods anymore.
More prophets still come and deal with issues but those issues aren’t idol worship.
The spirit is often associated with water and being poured out is an image used often.
Now after Israel seems to have things back together a little, at least as far as no longer worshiping false gods Jesus arrives.
He lives perfectly, casts out demons, heals the sick, makes the blind to see, and the deaf to hear.
Near the end as He is revealing His plans to the disciples he says this.
Then Jesus is executed dead for three days buried in the grave and yet rises on the third day!
He stays for a time with his disciples and hundreds of followers see Him.
The Spirit is that helper.
This is The Spirit this passage in Joel speaks of.
That spirit continues in our lives today as the one who sanctifies and seals us in the promises of God.
It is for all and the major segments that divide the society of the ancient world are refuted here it breaks the gender divide because the spirit is given to men and women, it spans the age gap and is given to the young and the old not just the elders who are in charge, and it is given to even slaves not just the rich.
This promise comes to all of God’s people.
The Spirit is promised to Israel and through the promise of Abraham that he would bless all nations it’s a promise to us.
So when Ezekiel says in
It’s a big deal… it’s a deal that I think surprises many of the Apostles even.
Some Apostles are sent to confirm that the gentiles did really receive the Holy Spirit.
Peter begins his Sermon by quoting this passage in Acts 2:16-21
