Blessed Are Those Who Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness based on Matthew 5:6

I. Driving with hungry family.

II. What are you hungry for in life?

III. Read Matthew 5:6 and comment on righteousness. Matthew 5:6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.”

In Matthew 6:1 Jesus states, “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.”

Matthew 6:33, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

Romans 8:1 tells us, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

IV. Voices about Pleasure. Hebrews 11:24-25 tells us, “By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.”

V. Voices about Performance. Paul in Philippians 3:4-6 wrote, “If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless.”

VI. Voices about Possessions. Ecclesiastes 5:10-11 states, “He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity. When goods increase, they increase who eat them, and what advantage has their owner but to see them with his eyes?”

VII. How do we get real satisfaction in life? Deuteronomy 8:3 tells us, “And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.”

VIII. People you spend the most time with influence you.

IX. Same in things of God.

X. Look to Jesus in your spiritual hunger. In John 6:35, Jesus said, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”

XI. Conclusion. Who alone declares us righteous, not guilty, forgiven? Jesus. Who alone loves us always? Jesus. Who alone rose and conquered the grave? Jesus. Who alone is worth pursing all the days of our lives? Jesus. Jesus tells us, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied!” Amen.
