Introduction
For the last 21 days we have engaged in daily prayer.
Prayer has a purpose—an aim—an ultimate goal.
What is the ultimate aim of prayer?
Text
1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.
2 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.
4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
Big Idea: The ultimate aim of prayer is to be in the presence of God!
God is leading believers toward the chief fulfillment of His promises.
God wants His people to know that what he says He will do!
5 And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
Let’s look at six NEW THINGS God promises to do!
A New Heaven and a New Earth.
A New Heaven and a New Earth.
After Christ’s Second Coming, after His Millennial reign, after the last judgement—God promises to make a new heaven and a new earth.
1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.
This fulfills the expectation of the prophecy in Isaiah 65.
17 “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind.
This is an expression of the longing that God will deliver his people not just from sin and oppression but from the very possibility of these things.
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
The “here and now” of this promise is that we can experience a New Life in Christ.
We have been set free from captivity of sin and shame.
The “old has passed away.”
A New City.
A New City.
Not only will there be a new heaven and new earth, there will be a new City.
2 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
This is not a man-made city—it is the creation of God for a purpose.
And, that purpose is...
A New Relationship.
A New Relationship.
Our relationship with God is centered on His grace received by faith.
But one day, our faith will become sight.
3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.
God will be with us—and we will be with God.
We will spiritually, physically, socially, and emotionally dwell with God forever.
A New Way of Living.
A New Way of Living.
Today, our salvation is still in an environment of pain.
We are saved! But we are also in a world filled with sin and its devastating affects.
4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
No more: no more death, no more grieving, no more crying, NO MORE PAIN!!!
The old things are no more!
A New Strength.
A New Strength.
There are times when we are strong—and there are times when we are weak.
But there is coming a time, when God will give a life that will no longer suffer!
5 And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
6 And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.
Remember the encounter Jesus had with the Samaritan woman at a well?
Sitting next to a well that was dug by Jacob, Jesus declared:
13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again,
14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
A New Heritage.
A New Heritage.
There is a new inheritance for the conqueror.
The conqueror is one who patiently endures.
Faithfulness is the Key!
7 The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son.
The inheritance is centered on relationship.
It is a relationship between you and God.
4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,
It is a promise wrapped in love and obedience.
17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
Conclusion
All things new!
This is what will give to all who trust in him.
But in Revelation, we are also given a serious warning:
8 But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”
Let’s choose faith over fear!
Let’s choose righteousness over sin!
Let’s choose life over death!
