**Turn to 1 Peter 5:1
Recap:
FAR from HOME - EXILES & sojourners… = SUFFERING at times … YET WE can have HOPE in the midst of suffering
Last week:
SUFFERING = at times GOD’S WILL…God uses it to PURIFY our FAITH…LIKE GOLD is purified IN FIRE.
Our RESPONSE to SUFFERING should be ENTRUSTING our lives to God- faithful Creator....both SOVEREIGN & GOOD! & CONTINUING to DO GOOD
Now, we’re going to look at a final time where Peter offers instructions on how Christians should live within the church more specifically.
Read text & pray
32-31 MINUTES LEFT...🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢
Intro:
How many of you here today have ever considered the fact that humility is attractive?
Sometimes people will root for or against a certain sports team based on a particularly humble or proud player
Need:
We NEED to KNOW GOD VALUES HUMILITY
Also HOW to LIVE AMONGST BODY of CHRIST.
what should characterize our relationships amongst one another?
🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢
Text:
Thought 1: Peter’s command to Church Leaders
1 Peter 5:1–5 (ESV)
1 So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed:
2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly;
3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock.
“SO”/THEREFORE…following up on CONTINUING to DO GOOD & entrusting to God…
ELDERS- position of LEADERSHIP in church.
Also overseers/shepherds/pastors...
for LEADERS, doing GOOD = SHEPHERDING WELL, despite what comes.
🐢🐢🐢🐢
PETER ADDRESSES LEADERS here B4 the rest of the CONGREGATION
PASTOR = role of SHEPHERD…synonymous terms.
Shepherding includes LEADING & PROTECTING
LEADING & directing, helping GUIDE PEOPLE, CASTING VISION for congregation
PROTECTING from FALSE DOCTRINE…WOLVES...
🐢🐢
Last week:
JUDGMENT BEGINNING w/ elders in the HOUSEHOLD of GOD.
LEADERSHIP - held to greatest standard of ACCOUNTABILITY.
James 3:1- not many should become leaders, judged w/ greater strictness.
🐢🐢
PETER SPEAKS to those in authority from his OWN POSITION of AUTHORITY—FELLOW ELDER & shepherd.
He humbly didn’t use his apostolic authority, INSTEAD of COMMANDING…HE appeals/EXHORTS
2. Peter speaks as an EYE WITNESS of the SUFFERING of CHRIST.
Peter was an EYEWITNESS of CHRIST, traveled w/ him 3.5 YEARS…INNER CIRCLE...
“Witness”
word used for a LEGAL WITNESS who would TESTIFY in COURT
Recently TESTIFIED regarding CAR ACCIDENT…because I was an EYE-WITNESS
Likewise Peter was a witness…but we also want to CONSIDER what KIND of WITNESS he was.
GRUDEM: PETER’S WITNESS = 3 FOLD DENIAL...
INCLUSION of WITNESS = GRACE…2ND CHANCES!
HE AGAIN BECAME A WITNESS!
He FAILED WORSE than ANY other DISCIPLE EXCEPT JUDAS!
Yet, he FOUND REDEMPTION, led early church, wrote this letter, etc.!
3. Third identifier- he’s a PARTAKER in the GLORY that WILL BE REVEALED.
LAST WK: Peter pointed out we SHARE in CHRIST’S SUFFERINGS...
THIS WK: SHARE in FUTURE GLORY!
The future hope of glory will empower the saints to persevere no matter what comes our way
🐢🐢🐢🐢
(V2) AFTER laying out CREDENTIALS, PETER COMMANDS elders to "SHEPHERD” (lead & protect)
Elders shepherd, “GOD’S FLOCK”
Tom Schreiner....it isn’t their own flocks, but God’s that they’re merely entrusted with.
AS a PASTOR- I HELP LEAD this church, share Scripture, preach, etc. BUT this ISN’T MY CHURCH... Grace Chapel is a group of believers that belongs to God.
ALL LEADERS = MANAGERS, not owners.
🐢🐢🐢🐢
THEN, Peter says to EXERCISE OVERSIGHT- implies ACCOUNTABILITY...
SHEPHERDS are ENTRUSTED w/ CARE of the SHEEP...
PASTORS/leaders ENTRUSTED w/ CARE of CHURCH, watching over congregation.
will have to GIVE an ACCOUNT for THOSE under their CARE!
Then, Peter goes on to list a few ways that leaders should lead and ways they shouldn’t.
NOT done w/ COMPULSION, but WILLINGLY.
Shouldn’t feel “obligated”
It’s a PRIVILEGE & HONOR.
All those who lead in the church shouldn’t have the attitude of dragging their feet and sighing!
Serving God is a blessing!
Our PERFECT GOD is WILLING to USE IMPERFECT PEOPLE for His purposes!
John Maxwell...I get to, not I’ve got to.
LEADERSHIP ISN’T for SHAMEFUL GAIN, but should be DONE EAGERLY.
Shameful gain here has the sense of, “GREEDY for MATERIAL GAIN or PROFIT” (Louw-Nida).
Many people PROSTITUTE the PULPIT to DRAW a LARGE CROWD & get a BIG PAYCHECK.
PAID MINISTRY = BIBLICAL, but TEACHERS shouldn’t be getting RICH by HALF-TRUTHS & false doctrine.
Joel Olsteen- “I don’t know what they believe but they love God....” Large congregation, probably mostly unconverted people...
Andy Stanley- the gay “Christians” have more faith than him.
NEXT PASTOR…PLEAD…NOT SOMEONE who’ll JUST FILL CHURCH by TICKLING EARS!
-------
I want to see our congregation grow…but TRUE GROWTH of BIBLE-BELIEVING, BORN-AGAIN Christians is TYPICALLY SLOW…there are times of revival, but this isn’t typical.
3. Lastly, LEADERS SHOULDN’T LEAD by DOMINEERING, BUT BY EXAMPLE...
LEADERS WON’T be PERFECT, BUT we should BE EXEMPLARY in the lives we lead.
Grudem “Thus all in leadership positions in the church should realize that the requirement to live a life worthy of imitation is not optional—it is a major part of the job, challenging though such responsibility may be.”
LEADERS DON’T BOSS people around, because JESUS is THE BOSS!
LEADERS must LEAD W/ HUMILITY
Transition: After Peter explains how elders should lead, he shares with them the result of their shepherding.
Look at verse 4.
🐢🐢🐢----20 MINUTES LEFT-----🐢🐢🐢
Thought 2: The Leader’s Reward
4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
JESUS = CHIEF SHEPHERD
Every OTHER PASTOR = UNDER-SHEPHERD
Following in Christ’s example…but not the savior!
-------------
APPEARING of chief shepherd = 2ND COMING.
Remember, we SUFFER on the ROAD to GLORY! 2nd coming should bring us HOPE!
------------
Again, to leaders, he shares that there will be a CROWN of GLORY that is UNFADING!
1ST CENTURY... CROWNS/wreathes as TROPHIES for winners of ATHLETIC COMPETITION.
made out of PLANTS, would PERISH.
Those who follow Christ till the end receive a crown that will never perish!
NEVER LOSE its BRIGHTNESS...
As believers, we await our eternal reward!
We SHOULDN’T BE SWAYED by the THINGS of THIS LIFE!
Especially for leaders/teachers, KEEPING EYES on REAL PRIZE!
