Mark 1:16–20 ESV
16 Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” 18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19 And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20 And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.
The Call
Is a Call to Follow
This is a call to dscipleship. Follwing a Rabbi. talking like he talks, walk like he walks.
What makes Jesus worth following?
Many say they believe....but they don’t follow. They may even attend church! but they don’t follow.
Is a Transformative Call
Make you become. Speaks of transformational action.
Is a Missional Call
Fishers of men
It;s call that extends beyond yourself. When you know what Christ has done fo you, you will want to help others find the same thing.
The Response
Is Fast
immediately. they resspond quickly. they didn’t have to hhimhaugh around and think about it.
Is Sacrificial
They left something behind.
It should be noted that when Jesus calls an individual, this doesn’t necessarily mean that he will have to abandon career and family. In just a few verses, Jesus is going to be in the home of Simon’s Mother-in-law. Jesus frequently made use of the disciples fishing boats and they likely still occasionally went fishing and its possible the hired servants kept the business going. They did need income after all. So When Jesus says Follow me, it doesn’t mean that you never engage in that work again, but rather that the purpose of your work changes. It’s a refocusing of career, a radical change in priorities. Some people will find that they need to completely change their employment, but some will remain. But the response is still sacrificial
