John 6:26-69
John 6:26-69
The greatest events in church history, in my view, is the Person and Work of Jesus Christ (The Gospel).
The greatest event in churches today is remembering that..........I love partaking of the Lord’s Supper, which we will do tonight!
The early church, Scripture tells us, broke bread every night together. They remembered the Great Sacrifice of Jesus our Lord.
Details of that great supper with disciples is detailed in Scripture in Matthew 26, Mark 14, Luke 22, & John 13........At this time uses the simplest form of our daily lives to convey His sacrifice for us! The impact of His life on/for humanity is the greatest mankind has ever known!
Without His life, we have no where to go! That is what Peter declared in John 6, approx. a year before Jesus would complete His Work for us!
One of the greatest events in history is Jesus feeding the 5000, which actually would be more if you count women and children, some estimate 20,000 people. Jesus just there creating fish and bread.......from that miracle, Jesus gets to the real reason He came.......He came to save us, He made Himself the Only Sacrifice that would save and cleanse humans from their sin/uncleaness which we are unclean and sinful! Fact of the matter, the stain is already there, whether you try to do better or not, the stain can never be blotted out unless God does it!
Now, there is no way we can approach God, because we are a defiled being! The only way to save us was through God’s Son and Him becoming as sinful flesh......2 Corinthians 5:21 “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”
No matter how much you try to do it yourself, you can never clean yourself up and you can never do enough to please God!
Jesus is the only One that has pleased the Father therefore we live through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior!
1 John 4:9 “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.”
So, that brings us to this scene after He feeds 20,000 people and walks on water.....Jesus goes across to Capernaum, to get away from the crowd.........Why? Because they wanted to make Him king..........What is wrong with that? Aren’t we supposed to make Jesus Lord or Ruler of our lives?
The main thing that was wrong with that is found in our text...........John 6:26-69....There is a lot of Scripture to get to here, but it is all relevant, so bear with me! The crowd crossed over to Capernaum to find Jesus ........let’ read...........
The crowd asked...”When did you come over here?” or How long have You been here?.....
Jesus’ gets to their heart right away, stating in His answer that they were seeking fruit of the miracles, not the Son of man!
Give us more!...... “If this Man can create food, if we make Him king we will never go hungry!”
They sought Jesus for the physical needs, not that He was able to create food, meaning that would make Him God! They just wanted the food! They were not at all looking for the spiritual but the fleshly!
Jesus tells them that they should not labor for the meat that perishes.......This is a rebuke to the crowd (and us) for seeking the Messiah completely in an earthly manner!
The true source of life is Jesus Himself.......faith in Him endures unto everlasting life........This is true life, Jesus Christ Himself!
God has sealed life in His Kingdom in His Son Jesus, therefore true life is through the Son!
Stop laboring for the things that perish.....even if you have those things you will still die!
Labor for what is eternal and that can only be found in One Place....The Person and Work of Jesus Christ!
They respond by focusing all attention on work: (lit.) ‘What must we do in order to work the works of God?’ The expression ‘the works of God’ does not refer to the works that God performs, but to the works God requires.
Their question therefore resolves into this: Tell us what works God requires, and we will perform them.....
They seem to never get their mind out of the physical........1 Corinthians 2:14 “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”
They were desiring the natural/flesh rather than the Spiritual/Eternal Life/Jesus!
What Jesus was teaching them will end up being foolishness to them!
No work for you to bring you unto eternal life, just believe in the work of Jesus!
Some say that faith is a work of God........I don’t disagree, however I believe that the only responsibility of man is to repent of themselves and believe that our only standing before God is through the Person and Work of Jesus Christ!
I do not believe in my works, but only upon the works of Jesus Christ!
The conversation continues because of what Jesus said at the last of verse 27....believe on Him Whom He has sent....
As they continue that would be there theme.....they inquire as to what they should look for? God sent their fathers bread from Heaven to eat? Going back to earthly food!.......Spiritual blindness!....One writer wrote that this demonstrated their shallow, selfish curiosity!
Jesus answered that Moses did not give them that bread.......verses 32-33.........
By Jesus using Moses in this verse tells us the reader that a lot of attention has been given to Moses and might even suggest that they said that in this conversation, however I believe Jesus knew their hearts and minds and they always had placed a lot of emphasis on Moses.....Moses didn’t give you that bread!
Now, Jesus moves to the present and states that God has sent the True Bread from Heaven!
This Bread gives life (eternal life) (Life with God) to the world!
Then they asked Jesus to give them that Bread! More spiritual blindness! They failed to see Jesus as the Source of their life!
Better said they failed to see the Messiah as the True Bread! They were looking for something and did not see their Christ!
The woman at the well made the same request: John 4:15 “The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.”
Jesus answers with an “I am” declaration......meaning to the Jews that He was God. Jesus always added to that a metaphor which expresses of His saving relationship toward the world!
I am the Bread of Life, Jesus said......He is our only Source
The true Hunger and the true thirst is our relationship before God (righteousness) (Right standing).......
Matthew 5:6 “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.”
Come to Jesus to be fed, spiritually and believe that He is the only source will never hunger nor thirst!
All that the Father gives: His confidence is in his Father to bring to pass the Father’s redemptive purposes
And those that come to Jesus rightly/because of spiritual hunger and thirst, will never be cast away!
Jesus only came to do the will of the Father.......Jesus expresses His love and devotion to His Father in faithfulness to do the Father’s will.....which is?
That everyone which sees the Son rightly, (Matthew 6:33 “But seek ye first the kingdom of God.......) and believes that Jesus is that source of righteousness......will have everlasting life, being restored back to right standing with God and living with Him forever in His Kingdom........
When Jesus reveals the reality of Who He truly was and what He came to do, the Jews murmured or grumbled.
They went back to the natural and looked at Jesus’ earthly beginning.....He is not from Heaven, although it was known to them through prophecy that the Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem and also would be from God, yet they couldn’t see past their natural desires!
Jesus knew what they were thinking and grumbling about....
Much debate is made about this next verse: So God draws man: he shows him his wants—he shows the Saviour whom he has provided for him: the man feels himself a lost sinner; and, through the desire which he finds to be with God and escape hell, he comes unto Christ, that he may be justified by his blood. Unless God thus draw, no man will ever come to Christ; because none could, without this drawing, ever feel the need of a Saviour.
I do not know the exact formula for this drawing, but I do that unless we see Jesus as only the Way, The Truth, and The Life that brings us to the Father, then we will never be drawn and the only way to be drawn is to know our desperation!
Mercifully, I believe God gives all men that revelation, whether they believe it or not that is up to them!
Jesus tells them that every man that is willing to hear and learn from the Father comes to Jesus!
Important....Jesus tells them that no one has seen God except for Him..........
Jesus teaches us about God.....Colossians 2:9 “For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.”
We are drawn by the Savior Jesus Christ!
What you do with Jesus, everyone has to deal with Jesus (believe or reject) determines your eternal state!
Jesus is the Bread of Life (Eternal Life)..........The crowd’s fathers ate the manna from Heaven and they are dead!
Eat of this bread, Jesus.....that bread is His Flesh!
Still thinking fleshly they talk among themselves.....I am over paraphrasing but this was their thought.... “Is He going to cut himself up and give His flesh to us to eat?”
Some still think that is what happens when they partake of the Lord’s supper!
That is none of what Jesus is saying here!
This is the dagger in the hearts of mankind that our looking to Jesus in the natural or fleshly realm....
Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man (Messiah) and drink His Blood there will be no life in you!
The Person and Work of Jesus Christ is the only source of life and if you continue reading you will see the flesh that was given and the blood that was shed and unless you look to Jesus Life and Death as your source to live unto God then you have no life in you!
No true life....this life will end in death then comes the 2nd death, eternal death!
Jesus is the source for sinful mankind to be cleansed and return unto the Father, which is the only True Life!
This was a hard saying for them and still is for some.....my prayer for mankind is that we can see Jesus as our True Source of Life!
That we are saved from God’s through Him! Because in His Living and Dying, we are made right with God!
It is the spirit that makes alive not the flesh......stop laboring for the meat that perishes!!!
The flesh profits nothing!
What is the spirit? This is good understanding here......what is the spiritual?
Jesus tells us that His Words, His Truth, is Spirit and Life.
Lastly, there was some that refused to believe and went away, Jesus then asked the disciples..... “Will you also go away?
Peter asked: “To whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life!
We believe that You are that Christ the Son of the Living God!
The Only Foundation, the Only Source of Life!
Tonight, we will encounter just what Jesus showed His disciples that He was the only source for Life everlasting, do this in remembrance of Jesus that Christ the Son of the Living God!
