GREED

Luke 12:13–15 NIV
Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”
BE STILL/PRAY
Has anyone ever collected anything? What are some things that you collect?
Why do you collect them?
The problem with greed is that it is an issue that we have either one reason or another.
“ruthless self–seeking and an arrogant assumption that others and things exist for one’s own benefit.”
John Ritenbaugh
Hoarding and Spending
Hoarding-A disorder is a persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions because of a perceived need to save them.
Hoarding (Biblical context)-The collection of wealth, possessions, people and other items in an effort to fill an internal emptiness within an individual.
Spending-The compulsion to spend money to relieve stress and cope with loneliness, depression and anxiety, despite the financial status of the individual.
Spending (Biblical Context)-the spending of money in hopes to receive happiness from the items bought but never having enough to satisfy.
Matthew 6:19–21 NIV
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
MONEY DOES NOT EQUAL HAPPINESS
Luke 12:16–17 NIV
And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’
Luke 12:18–19 NIV
“Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.” ’
Notice the language being spoken in these verses...
Again, the root issue of Greed is
PRIDE
I STATEMENTS ARE THE INDICATION OF FALSE MOTIVES
Luke 12:20–21 NIV
“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”
10/10/80 RULE
STOP WORRYING
Luke 12:22–23 NIV
Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.
BE GENEROUS
Luke 12:33–34 NIV
Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
FIND FREEDOM
Colossians 3:2 NIV
Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
