Do the skit up front. I need two volunteers.
As we close this retreat, the thing I want you leave with more than anything is a personal relationship with Gods spirit, to be able to hear this voice clearly. Just as we saw in that game, theres many voices in our life that distract us and keep us from hearing the right voice.
If we are being honest, life is full of distractions and voices.
-Cellphones
-Social Media
-Teachers
-Siblings
-Netflix
-Group projects and more.
See the thing I know, is that all these things are not bad, but if we give ear more to those than God, they keep us from being fully devoted to Him.
Hey lets do something, turn to one person next to you and discuss this question, “When you are in a relationship with somebody, how do you prioritize your relationship with them?”
In night 1 Pastor Travis discussed the power of prayer and how it impacts our life, and then this morning Becca discussed what it means to be self fed.
See without the power of the spirit of God in our life, those other things can just become religious duties. But with Gods spirit they become transformational.
John 16:7 NIV
But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
See Jesus leaving earth, the man who was God in the flesh was a great thing, because with Him leaving, He gave us access to the spirit of God.
For those that have phones get them out, “How many could honestly say you have had your phone off more than you have had it on?” If we are honest with each other, we are more in tune with what’s happening on these, than we are with God.
But hearing the voice of Gods spirit is the beginning of your spiritual maturity.
Titus 3:5–6 NIV
he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior,
I love this because renewal comes from Gods spirit in our life. How do we lean in and listen then?
One and only point: The voice you give ear to most, is the voice you are devoted to.
(Share story from Summer Mission trip about Zach not waking up on time, and it took the interns yelling songs to wake him.)
See often times, we expect God to be like a loud yelling voice, and when we don’t hear Him, we get disappointed and begin to doubt.
If you have a Bible turn with me to 1 Kings 19:11-13
1 Kings 19:11–13 NIV
The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
See the Spirit of God often times speaks as small voice, which often times comes through a whisper.
(Share story of Gods whisper to me twice as I try to kill myself)
The spirit of God in you gives you the tools for a successful life.
Romans 6:22 NIV
But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.
I think for many of us here, our lives are full of loud distractions and voices that keep us from hearing Gods voice clearly.
But being fully devoted means listening and weeding through the voices to clearly hear the voice of God.
Three simple ways to hear the Spirit of God:
1.) Clear the clutter.
2.) Practice until you hear.
3.) Ask Him to fill you.
So what’s holding you back today? As we close today and get ready to head home, the thing I want you to leave with is the spirit of God clearly speaking in your life.
Will you leave here fully devoted to Jesus the rest of your days?
Close:
Lay hands on every student and pray over them.
Acts 8:17 NIV
Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
Activation:
-In the back of your weekend worship guide, there is a page that says “Action Plan”. I think in order for us to walk this out together we need to come up with a plan that works for us, only you know you best. So here is questions to help guide this time.
1.) How will you remain fully devoted to Jesus?
2.) Who will be your mentor this school year? How often will you meet with them?
3.) What results do you want? Give at least 3.
4.) Scripture for this year and write a prayer you can pray nightly this year. Doesn’t have to be long
