1 Kings chapter 4
SLIDE 1 “1 KINGS SLIDE IMAGE”
What does everyone remember from last week chapter 3?
Who is Solomon again?
What happened for him to become king?
Where is David?
Do we know the location in Israel where we are at right now?
It used to be the land of the Jebusites / God promised this way back to Abraham
SLIDE 2
18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying,
“To your descendants I have given this land,
From the river of Egypt as far as the great river, the river Euphrates:
19 the Kenite and the Kenizzite and the Kadmonite
20 and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Rephaim
21 and the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Girgashite and the Jebusite.”
And then here is where it took place when David was king and how it all got named etc
SLIDE 3
6 Now the king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, and they said to David, “You shall not come in here, but the blind and lame will turn you away”; thinking, “David cannot enter here.”
7 Nevertheless, David captured the stronghold of Zion, that is the city of David.
SLIDE 4
8 David said on that day, “Whoever would strike the Jebusites, let him reach the lame and the blind, who are hated by David’s soul, through the water tunnel.” Therefore they say, “The blind or the lame shall not come into the house.”
9 So David lived in the stronghold and called it the city of David. And David built all around from the Millo and inward.
Pretty neat huh?
The word of God is so wonderful connecting all this
Again all the detail God put into bringing Jesus to save us
SLIDE 5
1 Now King Solomon was king over all Israel.
2 These were his officials: Azariah the son of Zadok was the priest;
3 Elihoreph and Ahijah, the sons of Shisha were secretaries; Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder;
Sons of....... many of them served under David
SLIDE 6
4 and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the army; and Zadok and Abiathar were priests;
5 and Azariah the son of Nathan was over the deputies; and Zabud the son of Nathan, a priest, was the king’s friend;
6 and Ahishar was over the household; and Adoniram the son of Abda was over the men subject to forced labor.
SLIDE 7
7 Solomon had twelve deputies over all Israel, who provided for the king and his household; each man had to provide for a month in the year.
8 These are their names: Ben-hur, in the hill country of Ephraim;
9 Ben-deker in Makaz and Shaalbim and Beth-shemesh and Elonbeth-hanan;
SLIDE 8
10 Ben-hesed, in Arubboth (Socoh was his and all the land of Hepher);
11 Ben-abinadab, in all the height of Dor (Taphath the daughter of Solomon was his wife);
12 Baana the son of Ahilud, in Taanach and Megiddo, and all Beth-shean which is beside Zarethan below Jezreel, from Beth-shean to Abel-meholah as far as the other side of Jokmeam;
SLIDE 9
13 Ben-geber, in Ramoth-gilead (the towns of Jair, the son of Manasseh, which are in Gilead were his: the region of Argob, which is in Bashan, sixty great cities with walls and bronze bars were his);
14 Ahinadab the son of Iddo, in Mahanaim;
15 Ahimaaz, in Naphtali (he also married Basemath the daughter of Solomon);
SLIDE 10
16 Baana the son of Hushai, in Asher and Bealoth;
17 Jehoshaphat the son of Paruah, in Issachar;
18 Shimei the son of Ela, in Benjamin;
19 Geber the son of Uri, in the land of Gilead, the country of Sihon king of the Amorites and of Og king of Bashan; and he was the only deputy who was in the land.
SLIDE 11
20 Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand that is on the seashore in abundance; they were eating and drinking and rejoicing.
21 Now Solomon ruled over all the kingdoms from the River to the land of the Philistines and to the border of Egypt; they brought tribute and served Solomon all the days of his life.
From what we read so far what all does this show us so far?
We will see something pretty amazing at the end tonight
Who did God really want to be king of Israel?
SLIDE 12
22 Solomon’s provision for one day was thirty kors of fine flour and sixty kors of meal,
23 ten fat oxen, twenty pasture-fed oxen, a hundred sheep besides deer, gazelles, roebucks, and fattened fowl.
The NLT breaks these provisions down more easy to understand
SLIDE 13
22 The daily food requirements for Solomon’s palace were 150 bushels of choice flour and 300 bushels of meal; 23 also 10 oxen from the fattening pens, 20 pasture-fed cattle, 100 sheep or goats, as well as deer, gazelles, roe deer, and choice poultry.
SLIDE 14
24 For he had dominion over everything west of the River, from Tiphsah even to Gaza, over all the kings west of the River; and he had peace on all sides around about him.
25 So Judah and Israel lived in safety, every man under his vine and his fig tree, from Dan even to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon.
SLIDE 15
26 Solomon had 40,000 stalls of horses for his chariots, and 12,000 horsemen.
27 Those deputies provided for King Solomon and all who came to King Solomon’s table, each in his month; they left nothing lacking.
28 They also brought barley and straw for the horses and swift steeds to the place where it should be, each according to his charge.
SLIDE 16
29 Now God gave Solomon wisdom and very great discernment and breadth of mind, like the sand that is on the seashore.
30 Solomon’s wisdom surpassed the wisdom of all the sons of the east and all the wisdom of Egypt.
SLIDE 17
31 For he was wiser than all men, than Ethan the Ezrahite, Heman, Calcol and Darda, the sons of Mahol; and his fame was known in all the surrounding nations.
32 He also spoke 3,000 proverbs, and his songs were 1,005.
These men here compared to Solomon as being wise also but not as wise as Solomon actually come from the tribe of Judah
Which we get Solomon through this genealogy (Boaz, Obed, Jesse David, Solomon)
Check this out in 1 Chronicles
SLIDE 18
1 These are the sons of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun,
2 Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad and Asher.
3 The sons of Judah were Er, Onan and Shelah; these three were born to him by Bath-shua the Canaanitess. And Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord, so He put him to death.
SLIDE 19
4 Tamar his daughter-in-law bore him Perez and Zerah. Judah had five sons in all.
5 The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul.
6 The sons of Zerah were Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol and Dara; five of them in all.
Ethan was a great musician / helped Asaph with the Psalms
Look back at Kings 4 32 again
SLIDE 20
31 For he was wiser than all men, than Ethan the Ezrahite, Heman, Calcol and Darda, the sons of Mahol; and his fame was known in all the surrounding nations.
32 He also spoke 3,000 proverbs, and his songs were 1,005.
The book of Proverbs gives us only 800 of the 3000
We only have 8 chapters in the Song of Solomon
Seems like 3 Psalms were written by Solomon
Can you think of anyone who may have written that many songs
Steve Allen 1500 / Dolly Pardon 3000
Final verse
SLIDE 21
33 He spoke of trees, from the cedar that is in Lebanon even to the hyssop that grows on the wall; he spoke also of animals and birds and creeping things and fish.
34 Men came from all peoples to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all the kings of the earth who had heard of his wisdom.
Well what do you think of chapter 4?
What were the first things we saw Solomon set up in his kingship?
How do you feel about that?
Were times going pretty good? Prosperous?
Did we read anything spiritual in Solomon’s life
Did God ever give any warnings about this kind of kingship?
SLIDE 22
14 “When you enter the land which the Lord your God gives you, and you possess it and live in it, and you say, ‘I will set a king over me like all the nations who are around me,’
15 you shall surely set a king over you whom the Lord your God chooses, one from among your countrymen you shall set as king over yourselves; you may not put a foreigner over yourselves who is not your countryman.
SLIDE 23
16 “Moreover, he shall not multiply horses for himself, nor shall he cause the people to return to Egypt to multiply horses, since the Lord has said to you, ‘You shall never again return that way.’
SLIDE 24
17 “He shall not multiply wives for himself, or else his heart will turn away; nor shall he greatly increase silver and gold for himself.
18 “Now it shall come about when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself a copy of this law on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests.
