The word is cherub and the plural is cherubim.
It is basically a Hebrew concept that is played out in the New Testament under a different cover except for Revelation 4 and Hebrews 9. Cherubim/Cherub are not mentioned in the New Testament by name except in Hebrews.
The reason is contained in the verse: We cannot speak about this or explain it in detail.
We rely on the Biblical descriptions in Hebrews and Revelation for the application from the Old Testament.
And it says it is a difficult concept.
The Hebrew word and Greek words for Cherub sound very much the same.
A literal definition is winged creature.
Lexical aids to the New Testament says in addition to this we can note:
It is an order of angels, usually associated with the Mercy seat.
They are usually ranked below the seraphim, another composite being.
It can mean to bless, to praise and to adore according to Akkadian texts.
They first appear in Genesis 3:24 to guard against unauthorized re-entry into Paradise.
They are a fixture now within a short distance of the throne of God.
There are many decorations about the temple and other places of what they believed the Cherub looked like.
As in the temple, they would have been guided in their representation by Go what what they are.
