Matthew 12:31–37 NASB95
31 “Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven. 32 “Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come. 33 “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit. 34 “You brood of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak what is good? For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart. 35 “The good man brings out of his good treasure what is good; and the evil man brings out of his evil treasure what is evil. 36 “But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment. 37 “For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
I want to talk more today about the Necessity to be precise with your speech
Jesus is making the point here that words reveals ones character.
Verse 34…
Matthew 12:34 NASB95
34 “You brood of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak what is good? For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart.
For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart.
Jesus makes the clear point here that your words reveal your heart
My first job was at an nonprofit organization. We work with children and teens and low income apartment.
I remember doing big event and serving and doing really cool things for young people.
I also remember hearing some of my colleagues speak about the children they served. They were doing nice things for them but they talked about them and disparage how they (the kids we served) lived and acted
Notice Jesus word in verse 35
Matthew 12:35 NASB95
35 “The good man brings out of his good treasure what is good; and the evil man brings out of his evil treasure what is evil.
If you read that verse without the context you could be convinced that Jesus is referring to once actions alone.
But makes the point to tell them in verse 36
Matthew 12:36 NASB95
36 “But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment.
Don’t be careless with your words.
Why? Because
..... every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment.
Wow
Some translations say, idle…
Idle in The Greek is the word Argos meaning
1 to be without anything to do, unemployed,
2 to be unwilling to work, idle, lazy
3 to be unproductive, useless, worthless
Don’t be lazy unproductive using worthless or unhelpful words
Often times I have to ask myself, especially with my children , “will what I’m about to say be helpful.”
With my wife I’ve often said things and after I realized that what I just said didn’t help anything.
James tells us
James 1:26–27 NASB95
26 If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is worthless. 27 Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
True religion is not just church attendance and charity
It’s visiting the widows and the orphans, keeping yourself pure, and managing what comes forth out of your mouth.
If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is worthless.
WORTHLESS
Bridle his tongue, now I’m learning about this
Marian and I used to be farmers, yes!
We got a donkey
My first day the donkey was at my house I had my 2 girl and we were feeding the other animal and I couldn’t Close the gate quick enough.
So the donkey walked out of the gate into my open field
I called everyone I could to see how I could get the donkey back into its pin.
Finally I figured out that I needed to lore it in with some feed.
I asked what do I need to do to make it easier to get the donkey back in.
They said get a halter, I asked what’s the difference between a halter and a bridle.
I was told, ones for riding, the other is for leading…
Either way if you have one on you can control the direction on the animal by what goes over it’s mouth.
Jesus says
every (idle) careless, lazy, word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment.
Yes, the day of judgment
But If you can’t believe if important the things that come out of your mouth ask your wife or get married…
Proverbs 15:1–2 NASB95
1 A gentle answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger. 2 The tongue of the wise makes knowledge acceptable, But the mouth of fools spouts folly.
Proverbs 15:2 NKJV
2 The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, But the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness.
Another thing..
If you are a christian stop saying you’re a fool or our brothers and sisters are fool.
Do you know what the bible says about fools?
Psalm 14:1 NASB95
1 The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they have committed abominable deeds; There is no one who does good.
Proverbs 10:18 NASB95
18 He who conceals hatred has lying lips, And he who spreads slander is a fool.
Proverbs 10:23 adds
Proverbs 10:23 NASB95
23 Doing wickedness is like sport to a fool, And so is wisdom to a man of understanding.
Matthew 5:22 NASB95
22 “But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, ‘You good-for-nothing,’ shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.
Matthew 5:22 NKJV
22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire.
and whoever says to his brother, ‘You good-for-nothing
or whoever says to his brother “Raca”
shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire.
The words
‘You good-for-nothing or Raca in the Greek means ῥακά (rhaka), meaning fool, numbsull or, empty head.
shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.
Words, I don’t care what you say matter, and they matter to God
Look at your neighbor and say, I ain’t no fool.
then tell em’ you ain’t neither.
listen, it may not be good english but its good preaching.
And if you want to maintain relationships with anyone, you’ll be careful for what comes out of your mouth
You might say, “Derrick you’re overthinking this.” Which raises a question, “is it possible to overthink concepts and ideas about God?”
Here’s a thought , Jesus is introduced in John as the Logos, The Word.
John 1:1 NASB95
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Why word, why Logos?
Logos is also implied as thought.
Here’s an idea and truth God has always been a thinker.
The Word or Thought was with God, the Word or Thought was God.
Again, why? Because you can’t separate one, from His thought.
If we are not thinking we are not fully engaged or alive. We are not helpful or useful.

Useful words, takes thoughtfulness

If we do not think, We are poor in a world where currency is thought.
Notice what it then says,
John 1:3 NASB95
3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
All things, what are these things? God created the heaven and the world.
The cosmos, galaxy, planets, and time.
How thoughtful?
He creates a system and structure, but he’s not done.
Genesis regards the world as formless and void. That darkness was over the surface of the deep..
A thoughtful God looked at the emptiness and darkness and saw potential.
This is where our thoughts get us in trouble.
When we face problems emptiness and hardships often time we are not good stewards of our word
I have to be mindful or my thoughts. Because

Thoughts spark speech.

Logos must become rhema…
Both are Greek words for Word.
Logos - thought. Rhema - spoken.
God saw the emptiness and chaos and He thought before he spoke and said, “let there be light and there was light.”
Good call God. He doesn’t say, “this place sucks.”
He speaks light.
Let me put it this way, maybe your marriage doesn’t look like you thought it would.
Maybe theres some voids and darkness.
That doesn’t mean you should throw it away and start all over.
Stop, think.
Maybe it’s “still in progress.”
Notice John’s continual account,
John 1:4–5 NASB95
4 In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. 5 The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
Then he sees that light was good.

Good thoughts, produce goods words, and we see good results.

The problem is many Christian have skipped over thinking.
We think we are thinking about we are actually parroting.
We think we are thinking is quite a weird statement. I guess it is impossible to think you are thinking, without actually thinking.
I guess the better statement is, we are thinking too little or we are not thinking well.
Thomas Traherne an English clergy man from the 1600s says,
“As nothing is more easy than to think, so nothing is more difficult than to think well.” Thomas Traherne
Our thoughts are too low. We are too easily satisfied with our empty thoughts.
And empty thought produce empty, careless, idle words
A couple more scripture and I’m done.
Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word [rhema] that proceedeth out of the mouth of God”
Matthew 4:4
“The words [rhema] that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life”
John 6:63
“in the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word [rhema] be established”
II Corinthians 13:1
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word [rhema] of God”
Romans 10:17
“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word [rhema] of God”
Ephesians 6:17
“Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word [rhema]”
Ephesians 5:25–26
Some of us are in decaying bad relationships, because of the words we speak.
Dont speak empty words…
Bridle you tongue
Proverbs 18:20–21 NASB95
20 With the fruit of a man’s mouth his stomach will be satisfied; He will be satisfied with the product of his lips. 21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.
