Introduction
Close your eyes for a minute.
OK, now I am going to say a word and I want you ponder on what first comes to mind.
Are you ready?
ALIEN.
OK, open your eyes.
What did you see? Did you see a little green man?
Some slimy monster or skinny gray giants?
Our culture has given us many examples of what they think they are.
These aliens usually don’t have peaceful intentions and so mankind has to fight them off.
These can be frightening to people of the world but not us.
You see, we ARE aliens to this world and today we are going to dive into that concept.
Turn with me to the Gospel of John, chapter 17, starting in verse 13.
Before we get to the reading, I just want to set the stage for this passage.
This is a part of Jesus’ High Priestly Prayer that He prayed to the Father before the crucifixion.
He prayed for His disciples and those who believe in Him.
As we read this, I want you to picture Jesus looking up to Heaven and praying this over you!
Passage Reading John 17:13-19 (NASB)
13 “But now I come to You; and these things I speak in the world so that they may have My joy made full in themselves.
14 “I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
15 “I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one.
16 “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
17 “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.
18 “As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.
19 “For their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.
Opening Prayer
Father, today we enter into your presence with ears to hear, eyes to see, and hearts ready to receive all that You have for us today.
May Your word continue to transform us so that we are not the same leaving here today, as we came in.
We pray you edify each and every person here that You may be glorified in and through us.
We pray all these things in Jesus’ mighty name, Amen!
