Introduction:

A. LOL. Jam. 3:1-5

B. LOL. Jam. 3:6-10

C. The Bible emphasizes this same point how we should be controlling our speech. (Jam. 1:26) Jam. 3:1-10

D. Our speech should not have a contrary purpose like a hammer but should be used to the glory and honor of the one we serve and so how are we going to use our hammer?

Body:

I. Our speech ought to encourage not discourage. (Jam. 3:10)

A. Our speech should be encouraging in nature. (Eph. 4:29)

B. It can also be rebuking to discourage sin. (2 Tim. 4:1-2)

C. However, it should never be done out of malice but only out of love for one another. (Mat. 22:34-40)

II. Our speech ought to honor not dishonor. (Jam. 3:9)

A. Our speech should be one that is giving glory and honor to God. (1 Tim. 4:12)

B. If our language is not honoring God, it dishonors him.

C. If our speech does not give honor to God, then we need to change it. (1 Cor. 10:31)

III. Our speech ought to lead not mislead. (Jam. 3:1-2)

A. As disciples we are called to lead people to Christ but how often do me mention Jesus in our lives?

B. If we want to be disciples, we need to talk about Christ, but we also need to study to make sure we are not leading someone down the wrong path.

C. That requires us to be good student of the Bible. (2 Tim. 2:15)

Conclusion:

A. I was once told of a story where a young man was building a porch with his father and the father missed with the hammer and hit the wrong nail

B. That father then had to control his language because just like a hammer can build a structure and can also tear one down our words can create or destroy.
