James 5:13–20 “13 Is anyone among you suffering? Then he must pray. Is anyone cheerful? He is to sing praises. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; 15 and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him. 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much. 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months. 18 Then he prayed again, and the sky poured rain and the earth produced its fruit. 19 My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth and one turns him back, 20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.”

God does heal today! Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever-

Hebrews 13:8 tells us: “8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

Did you all hear that? Jesus is unchanging, now and forever.

I. Prayer for Sick, this is why Jesus came, to heal, to love, to take care of us. AMEN?????—vv. 13–15

13 Is anyone among you suffering? Then he must pray. Is anyone cheerful? He is to sing praises. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; 15 and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him.

A. Pain and sickness=suffering right? v. 13.tells us: If we are sick we should pray. If we are merry we should sing songs, if anyone is cheerful we are to sing praises.

Psalmist tells us in Psalm 100 “A Psalm for Thanksgiving. 1 Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth. 2 Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before Him with joyful singing. 3 Know that the Lord Himself is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. 4 Enter His gates with thanksgiving And His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him, bless His name. 5 For the Lord is good; His lovingkindness is everlasting And His faithfulness to all generations.”

We all need to be doing this, Practicing this daily.

B.Our Father has a Plan for sickness, and He shows us this plan—v. 14.

“14 Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord;

Note three steps:

1. Call for the elders—the pastor and church leaders together.

2. Pray over them, those who are sick both physically and spiritually.

3. Anoint with oil in the name of Jesus Christ. This is not a medication—but a command from God.

C. Power of submission—We must believe and have faith, verse 15 tells us: and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him.

1. Perfection. “And the prayer of faith shall save the sick …”

We read in Isaiah 53:5 “5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed”. . Also in Peter 2:24 “24 and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.

II. Prayer and Simplicity—vv. 16–18

16 “Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.”

I touched on this just last week.

A. So you all see, we need to be having a plan of prayer. A focus, maybe have some notes, names, issues, reasons not just some rambling words that have no meaning.

1. The meaning of verse 16 is: “Confess your faults one to another, get them out of the darkness and into the light. and pray one for another, that ye may be healed, and pray with one another.

2. The method. “The effectual, fervent prayer …” This means, simply, a daily, determined, focused, consistent, prayer.

3. The man. “ a righteous man, a good man or woman, a believer of Jesus Christ …” If we maintain sin in our life God will not hear us

A song in the book of Psalm 66:18–19 “18 If I regard wickedness in my heart, The Lord will not hear; 19 But certainly God has heard; He has given heed to the voice of my prayer.”

4. The message, this devotion of prayer “Availeth much!!!!!…” There is no limit to the power of prayer.

1 Kings 18:36–38 “36 At the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, Elijah the prophet came near and said, “O Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, today let it be known that You are God in Israel and that I am Your servant and I have done all these things at Your word. 37 “Answer me, O Lord, answer me, that this people may know that You, O Lord, are God, and that You have turned their heart back again.” 38 Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.

17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months. 18 Then he prayed again, and the sky poured rain and the earth produced its fruit.

1. Faith and prayer—v. 17. Elijah was a person like us, but he had faith in God for an answer to his prayer.

2. Faithfulness and prayer—Did you all listen to verse 18? “Then he prayed again, and the sky poured rain and the earth produced its fruit.” “And he prayed again …” Go home this afternoon and read “Matthew 7:7–19: ask, seek, knock!

How plain can that be? If we need anything, ask God, if are hearts are right, ask God. If our hearts are not right, “ASK GOD TO HELP AND BLESS YOU WITH GETTING YOUR HEARTS RIGHT AMEN! Then our prayers will start changing wont they?

III. We can have Pardon and Salvation through Jesus Christ.

19 My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth and one turns him back, 20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.”

A. The person who strays—v. 19. Those who slip, or backslide should be understood.

Galatians 6:1 tells us: 1 Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.

B. The pardon, we as a believer of Jesus, who help the sinner and backslider save a soul from hell.

Do you have problems? Weakness? Sickness?—Allow God to heal you. Do you have marital problems?—God can heal them. He heals all types of sickness. As you pray for your needs, pray for others. The greatest praying you can ever do is to pray for others. Think of others and their needs. Thousands are worse than you—pray for them.

AMEN
