Reconciled to Jesus

Romans 5:9–11 NIV
Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

Chapter 5 so far

Peace with God

Romans 5:1
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ we have been justified through faith
man finds peace with God

No Shame in Hope

Romans 5:5
And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
God’s love has been poured out
we have been given undeserving, unmerited love

At the Right Time

Romans 5:6
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.
here is the perfect timing of God
unable to raise faith in our own power
Single Most Important Act when Christ died for the ungodly

Since

Romans 5:9–11 NIV
Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
Paul connects his arguments with SINCE
there is no doubt about the reality and veracity of our justification
now listen to the benefits that now flow
Romans 5:9 NIV
Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him!

Justified by Blood

now justified
saved from God’s wrath
this is not his anger as some see it
it is the righteous response by God toward sin
Romans 1:18 NIV
The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness,
saved is not through knowing God, nor by works, nor by the Law
saved through the sacrificial blood of Jesus ALONE
much much more we are saved
God is generous - he over blesses
Romans 5:10 NIV
For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!

Were God’s Enemies

fallen short of the glory of God
sinners
we were enemies
not a good description of who we were: enemies
it is in this position of being enemies that God reached out to us
God reconciled himself to us - not the other way around
he gave his Son, totally forsook him, cut him off completely

Forgiven through his Death

it is not just his death
shedding of blood brings forgiveness
Hebrews 9:22 NIV
In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
shedding of totally innocent blood provides excessive forgiveness
this is the means of reconciliation
there is no upper limit to the mercy of Jesus

Saved through his Life

much more we will be saved by his life
it is by the resurrection that death has been defeated
by his restoration to life gives us this eternal life
Romans 5:11 NIV
Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

Boast in Jesus

we can only boast in Jesus
this is the expression of humility
acknowledging Jesus as Lord and Saviour

Now Reconciled

no more waiting
believe in your heart, declare with your mouth
Jesus is Lord
you are RECONCILED to God
you now have love, joy, peace
