Ephesians 2:20–22 (ESV)
20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.
22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
SVCC is built by God, upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, and with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone.
We are joined together by union with Christ, we are growing, and we are a dwelling place of God by his Spirit.

INTRODUCTION:
Review:
SERIES WHY?… Dead to Sin and Alive to God
THE LORD’S PRAYER: FORGIVE US OUR Sins, trespasses, debt (Mt.
6 & Lk.
11)
Rom.
6:11 “11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.”
Romans 3:23 “23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”
“Have sinned” = hemarton, which stresses the decisive and universal character of the fall (Dunn 169).
It is also translated “miss the mark”.
“fall short” = hysterountai, which is the consequence of the fall.
The divine glory was lost in the fall and mankind cannot possess it apart from Christ (EGGNT).
As we look consider the sin we are to be dead to, we will have a greater revelation of God’s mercy and love!
TODAY: Four Stories of Major Sin from the Beginning
Scripture:
Four Stories of Major Sin from the Beginning
1. Adam and Eve
Disobeyed God’s command (Gen 3)
Genesis 3:6 “6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.”
Romans 5:12 “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—”
1 Timothy 2:14 “and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor.”
A transgressor was one who violated a given commands and commits a sin (see Gal 3:19)
Could be suggesting Adam’s is a sin of omission (not doing what is right) and Eve’s a sin of commission (willful act of wrong).
2. Cain and Abel
Cain Kills His Brother, Abel
Many similarities between Gen. 3 and Gen 4:
Can is asked where is Able/ Where are you?
(vv.
4:9, 3:9)
You are cursed from the land/the land is cured because of you (vv.
4:11, 3:17)
Marked/Clothed and Both Heading East (vv.
4:16, 3:24)
The first time the terms for sin are used:
A WARNING FOR CAIN: Genesis 4:7 “If you do well, will you not be accepted?
And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door.
Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it.””
Gen. 4:13 “Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.”
3. Sons of God
Sons of gods saw the daughters of man as good and took…their offspring are called Nephilim.
Social Violence and sexual perversion
Gen. 6:1-5 “When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive [good].
And they took as their wives any they chose.
Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.”
The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them.
These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.
The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”
Who are the “sons of God/gods”?
First, “the sons of the gods” are nonhuman, godlike beings such as angels, demons, or spirits.
Second, “the sons of the gods” are superior men such as kings or other rulers.
Third, “the sons of the gods” are godly men, the descendants of Seth as opposed to the godless descendants of Cain.
Most interpret them as “angels” (every translation is an interpretation)
Ps. 29:1 “1 Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings [sons of gods], ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.”
Job 1:6 “6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them.”
SIMILARITIES cf.
vv.6:1-2: SAW…GOOD…TOOK: Gen. 3:6 “6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.”
v. 6:5 God SAW the wickedness of man and the evil intentions of the thoughts of their heart
4. Tower of Babel
Context: Following the Flood
Gen. 11:1-9 “Now the whole earth had one language and the same words.
And as people migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.
And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.”
And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar.
Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.”
And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built.
And the Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do.
And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them.
Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another’s speech.”
So the Lord dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city.
Therefor…”
Inferred the people’s refusal to fill the earth as God commanded.
TO NOAH Gen. 9:7 “7 And you, be fruitful and multiply, increase greatly on the earth and multiply in it.””
TO ADAM/EVE Ge. 1:28 “28 And God blessed them.
And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.””
Also shows humans trying to exceed their limits and invade the divine realm.
Conclusion/Reflection:
All four are offensive acts
All four displeased God
All four resulted in punishment
All four reveal God’s mercy
slightly lessened punichments (i.e.
mercy/kindness)
Clothed and expelled instead of immediate death for Adam/Eve (vv.
3:22-23).
Marked and wonderer instead of immediate death for Cain (vv.
4:14-15.
Noah finds favor in the eyes of the Lord, the Lord who saw the wickedness of man (v.
6:8).
The people are dispersed by God (v.
11:9)
Ephesians 2:4 “4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us,”
As we look consider the sin we are to be dead to, we will have a greater revelation of God’s mercy and love!
COMMUNION-we remember this GREAT LOVE!
1 cor.
11:23-28 “For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you.
Do this in remembrance of me.”
