My own Moral Failure

King David: 2 Sam. 11-12

Summarize the story

David stayed back instead of joining the battle. (2 Sam. 11:1)

2 Samuel 11:1 ESV
In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem.

When David saw what he shouldn’t have seen, he allowed his mind to go where it shouldn’t have gone. (2 Sam. 11:2)

2 Samuel 11:2 ESV
It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful.

Rather than fleeing the temptation, David inquired about it. (2 Sam. 11:3)

2 Samuel 11:3 ESV
And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?”

David took action to gratify his lust. (2 Sam. 11:4)

2 Samuel 11:4 ESV
So David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her. (Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned to her house.

When David’s sin lead to consequences, he tried to cover it up instead of owning up. (2 Sam. 11:5-8)

2 Samuel 11:5–8 ESV
And the woman conceived, and she sent and told David, “I am pregnant.” So David sent word to Joab, “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” And Joab sent Uriah to David. When Uriah came to him, David asked how Joab was doing and how the people were doing and how the war was going. Then David said to Uriah, “Go down to your house and wash your feet.” And Uriah went out of the king’s house, and there followed him a present from the king.

David resorted to more and more evil to cover his sin, eventually costing the life of an innocent man. (2 Sam. 11:9-26)

2 Samuel 11:13 ESV
And David invited him, and he ate in his presence and drank, so that he made him drunk. And in the evening he went out to lie on his couch with the servants of his lord, but he did not go down to his house.
2 Samuel 11:15 ESV
In the letter he wrote, “Set Uriah in the forefront of the hardest fighting, and then draw back from him, that he may be struck down, and die.”
2 Samuel 11:27 ESV
And when the mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord.

David knew what he did was wrong, that’s why he was trying to cover it up; but he failed to see how wicked it was. (2 Sam 12:1-4)

Story of the rich man taking the lamb

It was easy for David to see the wickedness of another man, but he was still blind to his own wickedness. (2 Sam. 12:5-6)

2 Samuel 12:5–6 ESV
Then David’s anger was greatly kindled against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As the Lord lives, the man who has done this deserves to die, and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.”

David finally came to repentance when Nathan showed David his blind spot. (2 Sam. 12:7)

Application:

We often fall into sin of commission, because we have already fallen into a sin of omission.

2 Samuel 11:1 ESV
In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem.

The longer it takes to turn around, the more damage there will be.

Natural consequences.

Utilize the four guardrails to keep you from getting to far off track.

Daily time with God.
Bible Reading
Prayer “God, what do you want for me right now?”
Listening to God’s voice throughout the day.
Boundaries:
I don’t hang out in a room alone with a girl.
I don’t go out for lunch/coffee one on one with a girl.
Have filters on internet.
Lock up your phone. Only allow certain apps and websites.
Accountability: A couple close friends/mentors who you allow to ask any question about your life.

It’s never too late to repent and turn to God.

There may be consequences. You accept those and live with them. You need to move forward with God.

Receive God’s complete forgiveness through Jesus.

Make restitution where needed, but DO NOT punish yourself.
